Mixing regular anti-freeze with Dex-Cool?
This might fall under the "dumb as dirt" questions category, but...
Since my car is now throwing off the Low Coolant light for a few seconds every time I start the car, what would the real harm be in mixing regular anti-freeze in with the Dex-Cool that's already in the car?

I've heard a few different things, all of them not good like it congealing (sp?) and plugging up stuff like your rad and heater core, I've also heard that it'll mix and then corrode aluminum(not to sure on the valididy of that one).

Yep. I have mostly water in mine now....trying to clean out all the Dex-crap so when I rebuild the motor I don't have anything contaminating the old green stuff.

that wouldn't be a very smart idea. I'd just do a complete fluch and fill with prestone, thats what i did. it will be easier later on if you have to add again.

The official GM word on this is that it just reduces the life to that of standard antifreeze.

I have regular anti-freeze in the garage, but since I was out running errands today I ended up stopping by R&S Strauss and picking up a 50/50 mix of Dex-Cool. Added half a jug to my overflow tank.
Still don't understand why mixing the 2 would be bad. Kinda figured it was like the "only use Eagle-brand Goodyear tires on your vehicle"-type cross-promotional BS that we see with other products.

I'm really low on antifreeze, And there is stuff that's any make, any model.... but I guess I shouldn't mix it if there's any skepticals. Anwhere I can get this other than a Stealership?

Extended life anti-freeze
According to Prestone and our mechanic, it is ok to mix DEX-COOL with the new "extended life" anti-freeze made by Prestone. This coolant was developed to be more of a "universal" coolant. This is NOT the same as the regular green coolant. This is more of a yellow color and provides the same extended life properties of DEX-COOL and is compatible. You can also mix the extended life coolant with the regular green coolant, but then it loses its extended life properties.
