New guy from Saskatchewan
Hey all,
Picked up a Silver 02 Alero GL Coupe a while ago.... back in December of 05.
I've made about as many changes to it as I'm going to. I did the stereo, brakes, headlights, remote start/alarm, new tires (nothing fancy..... stocker rims just new tires). I love Aleros and just hate mine. Right now I'm saving up for something a bit more reliable.

It's a piece... got it in December of 05 as an Optimum Used vehicle from Sherwood Chev in Saskatoon. In the first 6 months of owning it I have spent $650 on new tires (yeah wear and tear i can live with that), new brakepads, rotors, calipers, brakebooster all because Sherwood didn't inspect the vehicle properly. Basically, after I had all the issues I saw the inspection sheet and Sherwood noticed the rotors were rusting for an unknown reason, so they cleaned the rust off em and sold me the car. Turned out it's because the calipers on the back were ceased, the calipers on the front were missing the bleeders, the brake booster was shot, and since the calipers didn't work it caused the rotors to rust through and then cause the brake pads to warp.
On top of this the drivers side window leaked water, found out on the inspection sheet that it didn't roll up when I got it. Then found out that Sherwood charged GM for a new regulator and window motor and just glued the broken pieces of mine and put them back in the car. So I had to repair that.
Then I noticed a loud rattling coming from the dash. Found out the resistor was shot before I got the car and Sherwood "fixed" it. The rattling continues and now the car needs a new blower motor.
The headlights were missing the adjusters (noticed that 3 days after buying the car) so I can't aim the bulbs properly. I had to buy new headlights from my own pocket to fix that.
The antenna has a short somewhere, so I have no AM/FM radio. So I got SIRIUS instead.
Over the summer in driving it to and from the lakes the windshield cracked (that one is my fault, not the cars, so no hard feelings there).
The drivers side power window control switch quit working. Had to replace that out of pocket as well.
I don't have an issue with Aleros. It's just Sherwood Chev and GM's shoddy customer service that's the problem.

Yeah well if you were lied to by the dealership, you know you can take the car back and MAKE them fix it right? I bought an old piece once that had a new inspection sticker and the rack n pinion steering was bad on it, so it shouldn't have passed inspection. I called the inspection place at the state level and my car got fixed for free and got alternate transportation. Funny thing is the rack cost 1200, i paid 800 for the car...

Believe me, I've taken the car back to the dealership several times. Every single time they find fancy ways of passing the buck then just flat out expect me to fix it at my expense. Jokes on them though, I figure if I have to pay I'll pay someone else, which is what I have been doing.
But I agree with you on getting someone at the state level to fix it. The problem is that Canada is a bit different. I have already filed several complaints with GM and they maintain it's a workmanship issue which makes it between myself and Sherwood. There is nothing at a provincial level for me to contact. Consumer protection laws only cover the first 30 days and since I am out of that I have no coverage. I have filed a complaint with BBB, and Sherwood isn't a member and they basically refuse to respond to the BBB.
I wish we had a state level inspector I could call. That would have made this an open and shut case. The only thing I have left that I can do is to go to court. Problem is that I'm a poor, unemployed student.
I've basically come to terms with the fact I've been ripped off on this car. I'm still going to keep the car for another two or three years. I've fixed everything that Sherwood has touched except for the bearings in the front drivers side. In theory, it should be okay now if I treat it well.

it's sad to say but this stuff does happen. i got mine at Saturn of Regina and it hasn't been bad at all. they fixed my windshield before i bought it and the wheel bearings where replaced under warranty. now my tranny slips and that's probably because i have never changed the fluid. now it's my sleeping beauty!!! if your car will hold up drive it. if not sell it right away. get a new alero of course.

Oh yeah. I'm pretty sure I'm keepin this thing. I love the way it handles and the fact I can go through the mountains and still pass people going up hill. There's something to be said for that.
Well, I'll keep it unless I move overseas. Basically I graduate in two months with my degree in computer science. If I get sent to the UK it's chevy alero for me.

damn...can you just imagine Europeans seeing a 400hp "Chevy" Alero? I'm damn near certain there's no aftermarket for them over in the UK.

Welcome! That's really not too bad on the troubles list though. It's a lot in a short time though it seems. Lucky you got rear calipers...Looks better IMO. Sounds like some of the stuff you could have fixxed yourself, but the cost for tools and stuffs would have been about the same, + your time. Nice thing about tools though is that you only pay for them twice. (I'm always breaking or losing something). Welcome though and I hope once all the small things are squared it's all up hill passing from here on out.
