Hey everyone. This is my first post to aleromod since you guys re - did the site end of last year. The changes are great but unfortunately I lost my post "status."

I did a search but didn't find to much "good" info on taking out the airbags. I planning on pulling my dash and recovering it with new vinyl. Any info on removing the airbags would be helpful.

By the way, I recently came into some cash so the mods are gonna start coming on hot and heavy. First up, new rims. I'll be sure to post some pix.

Thanks.

Wouldn't you want the air bags in there for your safety?

I apologize for not being specific enough. I only temporarily want to remove them so I can get the dash off to recover it. You can't get the dash all the way off without removing the steering wheel. Thanks for your concern for my safety, though.

You have to disable the ENTIRE airbag system when you work around them. If you just disconnect the battery, the airbag could still deploy. From the Haynes Manual:

First, pull the airbag fuse from the driver's side fuse panel left of the steering wheel.

For the Driver's side airbag, in that same fuse panel, disconnect the yellow airbag connector.

For the passenger's side airbag do the same thing in the passenger side fuse / relay panel.

To remove the passenger side airbag, do what bdyman said above. Go through the glovebox.

If you want to take out the driver's side airbag (i.e. the steering wheel) and you have never done something like this before, at least go out and buy the Haynes manual. There's a lot of stuff to do, with lots of pictures. Too much to list here.

Yea, I've done it that way before too. But the disconnects are right there in the dash panel, so why take a chance? Damn, that would scare the crap outa me if it just happened to blow for no reason! Plus you out a good amount of $$$.

Here it really shows, so far i've only been working on old cars...

I did a search but still have a few questions..

I have a grey steeringwheel and have the opportunity to aquire a tan leather steeringwheel and a tan airbag.

What problems can I run into when i want to swap them?

Can you simply exchange one airbag with another?

Anybody willing to copy the airbag/steering wheel part from the haynes manual and mail it to me?

Is there an actual sensor in the airbagunit or is the airbags itself save to handle?

any problems to be expected with the cruise control?

Al tips and help is appreciated.
