Alero from holland

Hi

I'm new here and i'm glad I found this site, thought the Alero was a verry unpopulair car for mod's.
I've got a european spec. alero (chevy over here) totaly stock up to now. Having some of the problems everyone seems to have, like the vent not working on low speeds. Other than that verry good car

I'm looking to get some mod's done, for my work i'm driving on the German autobahn's quite a lot. The power is good it hit around a 130mph with no problem, could be a bit faster but thats of a later concern.
The problem are the brakes, one good brake from 130 down to 40 or 50 and the brakes are instandly ruined. They start to squeek and woble at breaking.
So now I'm just trying to be easy at the brakes, but some times you just can't avoid a hard brake.

Has anybody got any good sugestions for the brakes, best woud be without having to rebuild anything, parts are not cheap over here so I have to get everything shipped over from the USA.

Despite everything I ofcourse love the car otherwise I wouldn't go through the trouble of changing some things. Its a unique car in europe, something you just don't see every day

He's on the autobahn. It's a freeway in Germany with NO speed limit.

I would think because of this they've disabled the speed limiter.

Mine is limited at around 210K, that's about 130mph. +/- a couple of miles
So that's no problem and it is alowed over here.

It get's there pretty fast to, there is a little acceleration gap at 70mph, but after that it get on going again.

Are the US models limited to a different speed?

(talking about the V6 here)

The fan not working on lower speeds is probably the resistor. Should be pretty cheap, I think the resistor at dealerships here is about $30 and is located above the passenger foot compartment in around the glovebox.

My Alero had a ton of brake problems... fault of the dealership I got it from though. Anyways my advice would be to avoid OEM GM brakes all together. Grand Ams, Aleros, Cavalier, Sunfires, etc here all have the same braking issues. Personally I went with a good set of Wagner Rotors/pads all around. It's been 6 or 7 months and about 10,000kms and haven't had a problem yet.

Over here in Canada the Aleros are everywhere... Hence why they're barely worth the value of the paper the registration is written on

US models are limited to 107mph from the factory. mine is limited to 255mph cause i changed it.

Alero's here are limited to 108 MPH, but the highest speed limit here is 80, in Texas I think, I know SC and MI is 75. Don't know what that is in kHM's.

The worth of car isn't much here either, selling it privatly you would be lucky to get more than about 4000USD (3200EUR). Europeans just aren't that interested in US cars, for one because of the poor finish, though I think it isn't that bad. A lot has changed since the 80's and 90's. The biggest thing is the fuel consumption however, a 3400 engine uses a lot more gas the average 1600 engine over here. Now most engines are diesels over here they use even less. (gas price here is 1.40 Euro/L, about 4.25USD/Gallon)



@Redog, 75mph is about 120Kmh, that is also the speed limit overhere in Holland. However germany is about 50miles away and I'm in germany a lot for my work, and as you may or may not know, on a lot of highways in germany there is no limit.

Interesting to know that they ajusted the top speed for Europe, I wonder if they have changed anything else. The handeling is pretty good even at high speeds, so I think they firmed the suspension as well. One thing is for sure they did not change the brakes, because those are defenetly not right for high speeds.

So true about the brakes. The longest unrestricted section is the one going North to Denmark. Fun times in a 1.2 L Corsa going 155 km/h.

Welcome and enjoy the car. It can have its ups and downs but in general it is a good car.

Welcome. You could always look into some new rotors and the corvette brake swap if you come across the parts... I know with just new rotors my car seemed to stop a lot better, until I put the 18 inch chromes on it lol.

yeah Antichysler I've got the same break setup and its great.
Calibers/rotors/Ceramic pads.
pretty sweet no problems what so ever.

welcome dutchalero, get some cross drilled slotted rotors, the holes let out all the heat so you rotors don't heat up as much. i don't have them but someone else can probably give you all the advice you need.
