so last night my amp stopped working. i thought it was just because it got hot but no lights turn on, not even the thermal light. i checked all the fuses and they seem to be fine. i have had this amp (rockford p5002) for about a year and im guessing its time to work is up and its fried like the other amp i have that jamcllw is fixing. i have this digital multitester but i dont know what setting to put it on to test the connections. any help please?

what are you trying to check? for 12v+ put it on 20 DCV and check between battery connection and ground connection on amp to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, if you get a 12v or higher reading + and - are ok, then use the same setting to check your remote on power.

testing complete, the amp is not fried. the problem lies in the distribtuion block for the power wire. i didnt think those things could go bad but it seems mine did. i have a 1 into 2 block and the fuses are fine but its not getting power after the fuse. any ideas? i took the block out of the equation for now since i am only running amp for the time being.

It probably has corrosion on the wire. Copper oxidizes at a very fast rate. This is amplified by heat. Try stripping back the wire and reseating it into the distributor first. If you still don't get anthing, clean the inside of the distributor as well. If you still have a problem, you may need a larger distributor for your current draw. The amount of amperage that can be passed through metal is dependant on the type of metal and size of it. Place your meter after the distributor and see how many ohms you are pulling. This is the setting that resembles a horseshoe. Then try your direct line to the amp you have. What is the ohm rating for it? Ohms are the amount of resistance you have. The higher resistance the more amperage that must be pulled to obtain the same voltage. The higher the amperage the more heat. If it pulled too much, the distributor may have melted. Very unlikely, but the only way I could imagine it would fail.

this the block i have. i swapped the fuses yesterday since the other one wasnt being used and that didnt work so im farely confident that it isnt a fuse issue, but i'll check it anyways. im gonna strip the wires and come to think of it, im pretty sure i had this problem with my other amp before, the plastic coating on the wire was actually melted though.

what kind of wire are you using, what kind of amp and whats the total rms wattage you have?? it should never get hot enough to melt a wire........if it does thats dangerous, if it grounds out on the chassis, it can spark and something can catch on fire......

He was running a Rockford Power T5002. 8 guage wire is entirely to small for that amp. The damn amp comes with a 100 amp ANL fuse built in. It's a power house. It needs at least 4 guage wire. It has terminals for 0/1 guage but I think if he just runs 1/0 back to a distrubution block and then 4 to the amps he'll be alright.
Anyways you add the T5002 and the P5002. Both of those are 500 watts of A/B circuitry. That's a lot of current. I can see why 8 guage wire would melt.

yeah what he said lol

i tested my ohms tonight with it hooked up to the block and it said 3.1 or around there. i still cant get the block to work though, its not getting power somehow. i restripped the wires and everything.
