Hello I just purchased my first ALERO, it is 2004 GL one owner car
with 32,385 miles on it the engine is the 3400 V6. It is not prefect but very clean . never been smoked I feel very lucky to have found one with low miles, but after a long search I found this in Southern La. almost every thing works except the cruise control it I think it in the on/off switch.
as when you engage it the light comes on then goes out if you keep the switch depress in the on position the cruise will work. any idea's on the cruise control issue would be greatly welcomed
Thanks Rick

Most people just stick a dime in between the button and the plastic to keep it working. But sounds like you need a new button. And i believe the wheel has to come off for that.

Heres a picture i just took on my car for reference. Mine works without the dime. But this is basically a cheap get by fix if you dont want to pull the steering wheel.

Also, welcome.

Hello and welcome to the board, and congrats on the find.

Steering wheel can stay on, BUT the airbag has to be removed. Its no fun having explosives resting on your lap.

In the on/off switch the rod that supports a tiny sprocket most of the times breaks and hence to locking of the button.
Not really feasible to repair as the rod and sprocket are tiny plastic pieces.
Look for a replacement, or use the dime

I replaced mine without having to take anything off.

How that? the bolts holding the Buttons and frame on, are behind the airbag - IIRC

They are behind the air bag. He must have popped the button cover off? Im not sure.

Either behind or beside. Either way its behind the steering wheel front cover with the olds logo on it.

had to google a bit as I couldn't find my own pics.
But the mounting for the switches looks like these -
behind the airbag itself
