my alero is still under warranty. I took my car in cause the power steering pump blew. while there i had them check out a ticking noise in my engine (3400). turns out my crankshaft was "bent" (i think they just ment out of balance) and the main bearings were gone. they replaced the entire engine with a brand new one.

I was just wondering if there is some sort of break in period. the mechanic told me to change the oil after the first 500 miles then i should be fine, but ive heard some mixed reviews on what u should do.

No hard throttles for about 500 or 1000 miles.

Don't stay at one speed for a long period of time for the first 500 miles.

Are you sure it's a "new" engine? If it was they probably would've given you break in instructions. It probably isnt a 0-mileage engine and is thus already broken in. Call them and ask.

Aren't you supposed cover the whole rev band when breaking in to expose the seals to a wide temp range?

I thought babying it all the time was bad.. for the most part yes, but rip 'er a couple times too

I always break in as I normally drive it and I had a car last me 200,000 miles. The otherones I got rid of either due to body problems or one was totaled so I never had problems with my engins

if it is a brand new engine...there is a process i do to all my new engines called "seating the rings"....heres how to do it..........from a dead stop...put the car in low gear, and accelerate normally to about 3000 to 3500 rpms, and let off totally and let the engines compression drag itself back down to nothing, reapeat this 3 or 4 times...what this is doing is when you let off the gas and use the mototr to slow you down...your forcing the piston rings to expand and push themselves into the cylinder walls,, and yes...nothing above 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles or so....the main reason you want to change the oil at 500 miles is to get rid of all the different assembly lubes used throughout the engine building process.......granted all this is if the motor is actually new
