What you're asking is very dependent on every other variable.
Offset, wheel width. You don't generally want to increase your overall diameter. Or reduce it too much. Make your tires wide as you need them to be and you shouldn't run into much problem at factory overall diameter. This utility is very useful when it comes to choosing tires: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
I run 225/50R17 on a 7.5" with +40 offset and it's the tallest I'd run reasonably.

Who knows, I ran BFGoodrich KDW2 tires at 225/45R17 and they held traction good enough for me. I have slicks for the track.
I should've gone with a wider tire I suppose, wider is better, but the car handles well for now. Maybe I'll sell these brand new tires and go get wider ones when it warms up.
The link above works now; Aleromod screwed up the formatting.
235/45 or 235/40 would work for you.

No they won't lol wtf. You realize your typical 225 tire is roughly 8.9" wide right? That works and looks just fine on a 7" wide wheel. So a tire that's 10mm wider on a 25.4mm wider wheel would be fine.
205/50R17 on 7" wide wheel
225/50R17 on 7.5" wide wheel
