Alternator Help
Hi Everyone,
I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction to repair my Alero. I replaced my alternator 3 months ago. Yesterday on the drive to work the car stopped working (Dead Battery) got a new Battery and tested the alternator. Which was not providing a charge. Got a replacement alternator which I installed last night and now when I drove the car in the morning the charging light came back on. Now this is the kicker..the charging light turns off when I hit 4500 rpm? Can anyone think of something that I might be missing to resolve this issue. Or should I return this alternator and ask for another one.?

Got home last night and tested the Alternator using a test light..after the tests failing when using the battery ground ..I reseated most of the grounds on the car and added three more (Battery to engine and two engine to frame) She seems to be driving a lot better..but did not have time to give the battery a full charge. This morning when I drove it to work the battery light would turn off at 3000 rpm. Thus I might be on the right track. I will give her a full charge tonight and test again tomorrow.

Also don't forget to check the wiring from the alternator to the battery, as it may be corroded or something. I'd check all of the heavy guage wiring you can find.

just put a 4ga wire from the alt to the battery and get a pulley for a 3.1 alt and your alt on your car will always put 14.7 volts at idle, this is also a cheap audio trick so you dont hurt your alt at idle and fry your amps or other components.

going to get rid of it because the charging issue has been the last straw. She's gone thru a whole mess of issues over and over again. I wouldnt mind having to plug the car in every night if it was an electric car.

Where did you buy this alternator> My guess is that you got a pices of crap from Pep Boys, Autozone, Advance Auto, or some similair place (cheap junk off eBay). If you want an alternator that is going to last more than a couple of months, you have to get one at the dealer, NAPA, CarQuest, an OEM one from a junk yard, or rebuild it yourself.
