they have less bluish tint than most aftermarket headlights. but they do this because the blue tint robs output luminance

well the phillips are 30% brighter than silverstars. i'd get them for the brights, and any cheap bulb if you want blue for the dims.... there were some blue ones here at target for 6 bucks.
if you want cheap, go cheap. better than paying 40 bucks for something you dont want.

just be careful with cheap lights. They will burn out your wire harnesses. Many of us had cheap blue bulbs, and most of us have had them burn out the harness. Silverstars don't do this. So while the Phillips lights may be brighter, not enough people have used them yet to know if they won't burn out your harnesses. And, I would actually reccomend spending the money on low beams, since those are on more often than high beams. Cheap high beams are usually ok.

the bluish tint in the silverstars and in other "blue" bulbs cause increased glare. that increased glare can cause another driver to "flash" you.

silverstars have a slight blue tint to appear more white, if that makes any sense?

Silverstars aren't tinted blue, they're clear with a tinge of purple. Once you turn them on they are white, not blue.

i'd like to see the research you've found that says silverstars have a "tinge of purple"
---------------
taken from GE research.
What is the brightest halogen bulb?
For the 55W marked segment, sorted in order of brightness:
+50%: Philips Vision Plus (achieves its extra performance by increased luminance, not lumens. See this article: http://www.eur.lighting.philips.com/press/...ltsVision.shtml
+30%: Philips Premium, Osram Silverstar (European marked only - see note below)
+20%: Osram/Sylvania Xtra Vision, Osram/Sylvania Silverstar (North american market only - see note below)
+0%: Philips Bluevison, Osram/Sylvania Cool Blue, Osram/Sylvania Halogen Plus, and OEM bulbs like GE.
-10%: PIAA Superwite
Silverstar: Do not confuse the European (clear glass) Silverstar with the North american (slightly blue tinted) Silverstar. The blue tint steals light!
PIAA "Xtreme White" was released ~Dec 2001. No independant tests have been conducted so far, but several positive indications has it that this can end up in the +20-30%.
Note that many cars sold after year 2000 already have premium bulbs installed and therefore buying any of the above bulbs might not give any or only minor improvement. Among H7 applications, there should be hard to find non-premium bulbs.

My research came from owning silverstars and actually looking at them.

I think theres a mis-understanding here. The unlit bulb is kind of purple, but when it is lit up it is a bright white.

Yes, you are correct. Silverstars aren't blue or blue tinted at all. They are purpleish off, and on, they are just white. Plus, they are DOT certified street legal, while the Vision Plus bulbs I believe are not DOT certified. Not that this is a big deal....
