Alright. A few months ago, A friend of mine got in my car, and noticed that my car was running slightly hot. I hadn't paid it any attention just about ever. So I guess I just didn't see it.
Its been getting worse. And I was told to turn on my air conditioning / heat to turn on the fans up front to keep the engine cool. At the time. I also had a LIM leak.
Well. I've had that fixed. And I'm still running hot. UNLESS I turn on the air conditioning / heat. in which case It still runs slightly hot. but not nearly as much as it would without.
Here are some pics of my temp gauge. Taken at a stop-light.
Any Ideas? I'm starting to get worried.

I just came from my friends shop. We just checked the coolant. no lights yet. He said something about an "air
bubble." But I'm still not comfortable with it at that temp.

I had the same problem and when I took it to the dealership they told me it was the water pump!
Cost $700 to fix anf has lifetime warrenty on the new pump. My car runs below the 1/2 mark now and has never (even in arizona heat @ 111*F) gone above the 1/2. That is also sitting in a traffic jam on the I-10!
I would check the pump. When the dealersip installed my new pump htey said they had to switch types because my old pump was not designed to get rid of air bubbles and the pump would eventually "air lock" which is what happened to me.
The new pump is designed to get rid of air bubbles plus like i said before it comes with a lifetime warrenty.

All i can say is that a few months back i had a ton of coolant problems. I went through like 10 bottles of coolant. I changed my water pump. wich yea it realy is DIY job takes like 20-25 min if that. then I took it to my mechanic he said i had a leak in my upper and lower intake manifold gaskets and wanted like $600 to do it. I told him to lick me. My friend was a GM tech and i bought the parts for about $90 took us like 2hrs and i cleaned all the slidge out of my engine. Ures doesnt seem to be running dangerously high but a little out of the norm. Get it checked and let us know.

Yeah it's not that hot yet, but will be a problem soon.
when it hits 3/4 you may want to get it fixed ASAP.

Your dealer took you for a ride, he was laughing all the way to the bank. There is no other type WP for the 3400, they are all the same. How do i know this? I just changed my water pump 2 weeks ago and i asked what other WP choices i had at autozone, pepboys and napa (yeah i shop around), they are all the same.

They did in fact revise the water pump within the last year or so, however i don't think any numbers changed... The original style had a cast iron impeller (used since '87) the new style has a stamped steel impeller. Not sure of any difference in reference to the air pockets, etc.. but i'm sure it has to be slightly better for performance just because it weighs a bunch less!

So, I'm taking it that the half mark is the normal spot for the temp... Mine usually runs right on that mark.... somtimes slightly lower.... Only like once or twice did it go above the mark, and I think it got pretty close to what your pic shows. hasn't done it sinse though.... What's the best coolent to use for the Alero???
