I think I may have a serious problem here. This has been happening for awhile now but never could figure out what the problem is and mechanics I have taken the car too couldn't either. Maybe they weren't very good.

Ok, I have been having to fill my car with oil at least once a month no leaks that I could see, no smoke from the exhaust no oil burn smell nothing. I could not figure out where the hell my oil was going until one day my coolant light came on. When I checked My coolant level it was at the right spot but I noticed that the coolant was a bit sludgy. Can this be were my oil is going? If so how and where and how much is this going to cost me :Noooo:

yeah I would say that might be were your oil is going. It is a sure sign that the motor will soon be on its last leg. I would say that you might have a head gasket leak, or something worse. I'm not a mechanic, but I would do a compression check and see if there is a piston with low compression. I could bet that there is where your leak is.

Its most likely your UIM or LIM.

I suggest you stop driving it and take it to the mech and get him to tear it down.

Here are some threads that deak with this issue

http://invision.aleromod.com/index.php?sho...ic=16481&hl=uim

http://invision.aleromod.com/index.php?showtopic=4390

Theres more info around, I just dont have the time to find it.
hope this helps.
Im sure more members will post more info for you.

Sorry but the UIM does not have oil or coolant running through it, so it wouldn't be the UIM. It could however be the LIM which you suggested or it could be worn rings or another internal engine problem.

i never said i was an expert, just trying to help.

the threads I posted deal with this same issue.

And from what Ive seen on here if hes missing oil and hes got the 3400 then its most likey the LIM. There have been so many documented cases of the LIM leak. the sludgey coolant is one of the first signs. also check to see if there is any white residue under the coolant cap of the resovior and or radiator.

If you wait too long you will start to see your engine temp rising and your low coolant light will come on. You shoudl look around the engine and see if you can see any leaks. if you can locate where the LIM meets the block you will see the gasket and possibly some evidence of a leak. I wish I oculd find the old thread with all the pics. I will look for it.

I think I did a post on this in the trouble shooting section a little while ago. Back in september, my engine coolant was sludgy too. Thought it just needed to be flushed out and changed. Since I couldn't even recall if I had it done or not. Usually I just have my mom take it to the auction, where she works and they fix the car up for me.

Anyways, few months later, my engine coolant light keeps coming on. Take it to this place called Last Chance Auto, and apparantly my engine coolant was leaking into the engine. My gasket was replaced.

look under your oil cap, if it looks like a chocolate milk shake take it to a shop right away, like was already said its the lower intake manifold gasket. Shop will charge on average of $700 is what i have heard.

Oil in the coolant is much less serious then coolant in the oil, actually. But chances are they both point to a leaky lower intake manifold gasket. Chances are any dealer or mechanic who's seen a 3.4 has seen it before. The fix is $600-800. I got it done at my dealer for $200 because they goodwilled it for me. It's a known problem. If you have less than 60,000 miles and a good relationship with your dealer you may be able to get the same deal.

If the dreaded sign is oil that looks like coffee: what kind of coffee are we talking about? Oil that has been sitting in an older engine for a while will usually come back out black so if it is black coffee colored that wouldn't necessarily alarm me...

However, creamer in black coffee turns it that brownish color that if I saw it in my oil I would take pause. Oil starts out that clear, brownish/amber color that looks so fresh you engine will love it, but coffee with creamer brown would be totally unnatural.

Which is it?
