As the title says, Redog is now Semi Retired from the 1/4 mile.

I took the car over to the mech on Sunday and it was leaking this odd liquid. I had no idea what it was. The car struggled a little bit on the hills and such, and the EGT read a little higher that normal.

Turns out, the liquid was gear oil. That's right. I destoryed the "rear". FWD cars have them but they are buried deep inside the tranny. Did I really do a number on it. I cracked the case for the tranny as well.

I'm not too upset about the car. Yes, it's being fixed, but I have a good mech and I know the car will be good, but the $2,000 to get fixed, ouch that hurts big time.

Anyway, my mech said that it was the hard starts and burn outs that did the damage, and since I don't have the money, or want to spend it, on a 4t65 swap, I'm just going with the 4t45 that already in the car, new of course. He did say that I could still race it, but not as often as I did before and no more killer burn outs

My mech is cutting me a break, $500 off, since I am a loyal customer, and since I have the cash, that is what he is getting.

Considering now a total race car. Something still streetable and run 12's or 13's at the track. Thinking about a 78 to 82 Malibu, Monte, or Cutlass. I like that body style a lot. At first, just racing with the stock motor and tranny, then going (after a year) with a SCB 350 or 400, 700rt tranny, and maybe a Ford 9" rear. Nothing to drastic, just enough to put down some nice numbers, and dirve back and forth. Going to think about it over the winter.

Yeah, it's almost impossible to kill a stock 4t45, but once you add all the crap (er, I mean, mods) and start mashing on it like that it's just a matter of time. That's a good deal for a new one though.

My first car was a 1978 Chevy Malibu, It had the V6 with a whopping 90hp I believe.
I loved that car!!! My dad wouldn't let me drop a 383 stroker in it like I wanted to.
Because "I had to have reliable transportation to get down to school with"

I have to see I'f I can dig up a pic of it somewhere......

So THAT's what was wrong. That sucks.

Early 80's Malibus are a dime a dozen and easy to modify, which is why you see so many at the track nowadays. Maybe your buddy still has that POS '75 Malibu for sale. :P

get a 70-72 442 w30, a little more pricey but it could be your show and race car......

Should have paid more attention in Grammar. And if you read his post, which I'm sure you didn't, since for whatever reason you two seem to just love to hate each other, you'd see that he just wanted to fix the Alero and retire it. The GAGT swap is way more complicated and expensive than what he's doing anyway.

Kind of off topic, but a few have posted about a 4t45 swap!?

My only question is why would anyone want the 4T45e???? IMO, it isn't worth it. If anyone decides to do a swap, go for a 65.

well it is, and isnt worth it.

if you're looking for a cost effective, rather simple auto tranny upgrade (to better gearing) go with the gagt tranny.

the 4T65 is a much bigger monster. but you know that.

The only reason anyone wants the GAGT tranny is for the 3.29 final drive. A V6 Alero has a 4t45e with a 3.05 final drive. To do the swap is much more that just setting a tranny and PCM in. You need the BCM too, because the PCM checks the BCM for the VIN, and everything has to match or it'll kill the car.
And the 65 really isn't that great of a trans anyway, beef up a 45 if you want something for an Alero.

I do listen when he goes on and on and on and on about work. And I even have a brain of my own.

the 4T40-E is in the 4-cylinder models only as I remember... It's quite strange that the trans actually has gear oil in it for the differential. I don't think that's a normal occurrence in a FWD transaxle.

Redog, you should just delve into a 5-speed swap =)

Aleros and GA's both have 4T40s and 4T45's. 40's go in 4 bangers and 45's go in V6's. Well, newer 4's have 45's too, and 2.2's and 2.4's are split and everything depends on model year.
V6 Aleros - 4T45's with 3.05 final drives.
GAGTs - 4T45's with 3.29 final drives.
