Anybody know what the max tire width you can put on the Alero w/o rubbing issues when turning lock to lock? I'm thinking of going up to a 235/45/17. Anybody running this size?

you will have NO problems with that size.
i'm running 255/40r18 up front and can turn lock to lock.
so to answer the max width i would say 9" wide sidewall to sidewall and that is at a 26" diameter tire.

Thanks. Appreciate the info. Now I just have to decide which tire to go with for a balance of performance with real world driving. It can get snowy by us.

^ best answer to that (IMO) would be to get 6" wide steelies with snow tires for the winter and get whatever size you want for spring/summer.

i was gonna change from 235/40/17, to 245/40/17 in the rear but with my rim offset i can barely put my pinky between my tire and strut.

This is sort of off topic but i ahve been wondering. What is the deal with spacers. Can someone explain to me what the purpose is for them whether it be looks or performance. And can you put spacers on with any rim?

Spacers can be for both(though mainly performance). As stated above though, the farther you out away from those bearings, the more the stress...and that is known as one of the weak points on our cars ( the bearings). I would stay away from them myself.
IMO, the risks definately wouldn't be worth the gains.
