Not a surprise, this has been going on for years.

I remember on 20/20 once they put New York plates on a car in LA and got charged 3 times the amount for each repair

Figures. Whenever I have to take my car to a place like that because I dont have time to go home to my regular mechanic I always stand right outside the garage and watch them like a freaking hawk.

There was an independant shop in my home town that tried pulling stuff like that on me before, and that was the LAST time it ever happened. I took my car somewhere else and gave them so much bad publicity it wasnt funny. I really talked crap about them to anyone who would listen. And, no suprise, 2 years later, they're out of business.

The only time I've ever been to a jiffy lube-ish type place they had told the guy in front of me that his brand new car was leaking massive oil and they wanted to fix it. It's ridiculous, just like on 20/20 where they show you some randomly placed oil and they want you to have them fix it.

And walmart I hear puts threadlock on oil drain plugs, and thats mandatory if you want your oil changed there.

Apparently you really need to do things yourself today.

My mech says this: "Why bang (rip off) them once for a $500 job that they don't need, when you can do the job right for a low price and gain a new customer"

These guys are the a-holes that give all mechanics a bad name, i am going to school to be a mechanic and my instructors tell us all the time about guys like this. But you also gotta watch the guys who have no idea what they are doing, they can screw you over just as bad. my advice is find a tech that you trust and stick with them.

i know what you mean. im lucky enough to know a shop that has a small town mentality, and actually shows me what they did, how they did it. Even explain to me all that techinical stuff, and my mechanic likes to go target shooting every once and awhile. but i wonder what Jiffy-lube did to "fix" this problem

My wife took her car to a Jiffy-lube when she was just out of high school. I had warned her about the job they do (quick drains of oil that cause engine sludge) but she insited on it. She lived about twenty city blocks from the jiffy-lube. When she reached home the oil light was on. She called me in and I found that the idiot had nearly twisted the oil plug off and drained nearly all the oil out. It took me about two hours to get the plug out before I decided it was there problem. One call and a hour later it was towed to a local mechanic and fixed at there cost. It is not a hard job. Do it your self and save the worries.

I just changed the oil in a car that was previously done at Jiffy Lube (specifically a 2000 Camry).

The oil filter was "Global Spec" brand (something like that) and made in China. The oil drain plug as missing the gasket and yes it was leaking oil from it.

The first time I changed the oil in my Alero after I bought it I had to use an impact to get it off and replace the plug because the last oil change had been done at walmart and they used so much loctite that it oozed out around the edges of the bolt and even damaged the seal on the plug.

Wow you had to use a impact gun to get it off that is bad. i will never take my car to one of those places. I change my own oil, coolant, tranny fluid. They blew my friends subs on him. When he asked them why they are blown they said they did not blow them.

I have had no problems at the Jiffy Lube by my house. Mainly because my brother used to work there and made sure any work done on my car was done right. I had my tranny and coolant flushed there almost a year ago and still everything works as it should. Maybe its an American Jiffy Lube thing?

Does that somehow not make these posts relevant?
