Tranny issue
Ok guys. My sons 04 Alero 3.4 has no forward gears. Only reverse works. Anyone experience this? What might it be? Im thinking a solenoid.

I'm not completely sure what it could be but I know there are shift solenoids to control the shifts. As far as not having any forward gears it could be a bad range sensor. That's the one on top the linkage goes through. it moves a checkball that controls fluid flow to certain parts so you only have however many forward gears you want. It almost sounds like the transaxle is fried. It may also be as simple as the fluid level is too low, which is a possibility as these cars don't have a dipstick. You have to check it by taking that bolt out in the passenger side extension housing with the car running and see if fluid runs out. Really need a transmission expert on this one. I'm just thinking of ideas. Hard to diagnose without actually having the car in front of me. Good luck.

Oldsman:
I found this answer online on another guys post from a GM Master Tech.
If it only has reverse, and it wont even try to engage into any drive gears, Then Yes the issue is internal (bad forward clutch pack,or broken shift valve in the valve body,Or one way clutch sprag) The Transmission will have to be removed and dissembled for inspection.
Not good news for sure. Hopefully you know a good rebuild shop.

How many miles are on this transmission?
Did you check the transmission fluid level?

The solenoid pack is so far inside the transmission, you may as well just rebuild the entire transmission.
4T45e's are pretty cheap to buy used. I picked up mine out of a 2003 Grand Am GT for $265. Since I have the HPTuners, I was able to reprogram for the 3.29 FDR, since all the Alero V6's came with 3.05 FDR's
Don't know if you want CJ to have that or not. It really doesn't make that much of a difference though

You say that like it's a bad thing. I'd post here more often, but for some reason this site is always blocked at work. And I'm referring to more than one place too.
