materials shouldn't cost much really, there's nothing exotic about them...if he knows how to form them and weld them up...can make the brackets and everything needed and won't charge anything for labor, 500 sounds do-able with a used or rebuilt blower

If you want it to be a little easier, find a newer Saab in a junkyard to raid the parts off of. They use a Turbo Ecotec in any of the epsilon 9^3s.

yeah, I'd say something here is a little bit nuts, just the parts alone are going to be about a grand if it's done RIGHT.
Best of luck to you though.

Your 5 speed Ecotec is a perfect starting point for a turbo. Turbo Ecos have proven to have great power potential as well as being very reliable.
The fabrication of the charge pipes and exhaust is a huge part of the headache (and down time) of installing turbos on Aleros. Since that's all taken care of for you, it won't be extremely difficult to piece together the rest of the kit yourself, which will be cheaper than buying that pre-built kit. Also, $500 is a great price for all the piping and fab work.
If you're serious about it, shoot me a PM and I'll make you a list of the things you'll need, then you can decide for yourself what you want to do.

I say its do-able, but leave yourself a bigger budget. Projects like this always cost more then expected.

I priced out a budget system and it all came to about 1500 said and done with doing all my own work. I will try to find all the info again... and that is turbo, wastegate, ic, piping, everything.
