New to Alero
Hey, I'm Joe, new to cars period
Trying to start off with the alero my pops bought me, people saying it can't be done, and thats its not worth it. If I can just get it to look nicer then half the trash rolling in newport news, I'll be good.
2002 Alero, going over to a friends house to figure out the other stats for it.
Any hints, help and well shops to check out, feel free to assist =)
I was told the the previous owner built the engine himself.. so idk what I can do there.

Weclome to the site, you will learn a lot of info about the car here, that I promise you.
Also, people say it can't be done and full of shit, we have 3 Aleros on here running in the 13's and 2 more will be there soon (more tuning required) With a car that runs the 1/4 mile in the 16's stock.
You'll hear that a lot. People think that if it's not an "off-the-shelf" car it can't be done

lighter cars.........and a bigger community and that is why you see the difference in results, for every serious alero buildup you have 25 cavalier buildups simply because of the sheer numbers....

Sorry to disappoint ya.. its a sedan. (4 doors)
Also, took a peek under the hook, and saw 3400 right above the enigine, which I think makes it this.. http://sites.google.com/site/aleromo...ngine/la1-3400
Don't know how to check but it does have the cover.
Its a automatic (Didn't think it would matter, but I guess it kinda does."
Front Wheel drive, Think its a GL, leather steering wheel?
Anything else I should try and check out?
And, also is the air filter the easiest/best first upgrade, go from the box filter, to the cone or air breather?

heres a question for him (for us, to help him) is the previous owner did in fact do engine work... how could you ever know? by "engine work" that could be the LIM fix, or a full headswap.
welcome aboard dude. The first step is easy. look around, check out other mods that people have done, and decide where you want to go with your car.
after that, beat the search button like it owes you money, and keep us posted with what you've done. (or ask questions about how you go about doing something)

if its says 3400, the its the LA1 3400, nuff said. they never came with a stick. I'm gonna go on a limb and say if its a 3.4 with a leather steering wheel its probably a GL2.
air filter is usually the most common first upgrade, but get a full system with a cone filter. the stock system is super restrictive even with a replacement filter. from there lots of the 3.4 guys go with a exhaust system with flowmaster 40 series.
o yea, and clear your corners

Before I go anywhere, and start slamming the search button, I have 180k miles on the sucker. That mean anything big? And if I could find a way to get ahold of the guy who owned it last I would. Got it through my dad's mechanic for 3k about year and half ago.

depends on what the guy had done. some 3400s croak around mid 200k...
but if he had the engine rebuilt.. then there is nothing to worry about.

^x2. but if its just the limg fix, you are running shorter on life. if should go to the mid 200k mark tho, but with a ton of miles i wouldn't repeatedly rev the pis out of it, unless the whole engine has been rebuilt already, then your good.
