why swap the motor? Thats just a pain in the ass. The eco has lots of potential, just start researching and you will learn a lot. And whiteliquid i think that your estimate might be a little low, a decent kit to install yourself would cost around 3-4k i think, so to have a shop install it all you are probably looking at more like 6k. But i could be wrong, thats just off the top of my head.

yup the ecotec stock block is a very sturdy block, i believe the GM drag racing ecotec was still stock bottom end up to about 800 hp? maybe more cant remember, but there is an article online with a chart that sums up where they replaced parts corresponding to the HP levels

if you have time, then start learning turbo systems cause u can piece a good turbo kit together for about 1,000, maybe less depending on your desired gains

That's a little low. To do it right with some decent quality parts it'll run you more in the vicinity of 2200, and that's with buying some used parts, and welding/fabricating everything yourself. With all brand new parts call it 3200-3500. If you don't know how to install everything yourself, look at a few days in the shop and probably another 1000ish for labor.

Like number1alero said, if you've got a while, learn about how everything works and find a few friends willing to help with the build. You'll save yourself a lot of money and you'll know everything is installed right. Plus if there's any problems, you'll know right where to look because you put everything in yourself.

You might even get it for less if you can score a 2004+ Saab 9^3 in the junkyard.
