Sorry if anyone got offended by my comment. The reason I mentioned it was because on my delta, everytime Id open my cutout, gas mileage would get worst, and I didnt feel much difference in power. The sound was actually pretty nice though and thats why Id keep it open.

in this April's issue of Import Tuner (yes I know referring to an import magazine on a domestic car forum is a bad idea) They dyno tested and compared stock catalytic converter to a "gutted" stock cat and a test pipe in place of a cat converter the test car was a Miata for each test they did three 4th gear pulls to establish an average baseline. The first run they used the stock cat and ran an average of 104.1HP/92.63TQ second run was the gutted cat and ran an average of 103.0HP/92.1TQ and the third was with the test pipe ran an average of 105.4HP/93.9TQ keep in mind this car is different from ours and all engines run different they didn't state how many miles are on the Miata but I would assume that a high flow cat would make a difference of about +.5HP but I could be wrong. I would also like to see someone do this with 3 Alero's one for each engine size.

I say a universal cat is a stock cat that is meant to be welded to any car, and that it is inferior to a true high flow cat, but I guess some companies would name their "universal cat" as a "high flow universal cat" which screws all my ideas

Well, one thing is for damn sure, and that is that the cat does not add hp. It adds resistance therefore a power loss.

Well put. For engines that are stock or only slightly modified, changing the cat will make only a minimal difference. As you start adding more power (i.e. supercharger/turbo), it becomes more important to increase flow in the exhaust system.
My F150 has 4 cats, two per side. Now thats restrictive. They are all coming off soon and will be replaced with 2 Bassani hi-flows.

There are no emission laws up here in Canada.

There are. If he gets caught by a cop and that he checks under the car and see no Cats, he will probly ask for an inspection, and that wont pass.

the only thing he will see is a muffler that looks like a cat and that is at the place of the original cat... so I doubt that there will be a problem with that... And I'm getting my car evaluated and inspected this summer.. If a cop try to give me an exhaust ticket or anything else I will slap him in the face with the paper of the inspection that proves that my car is 100% legal

but how can your car pass the inspection with no cat? I mean the guy at the inspection wont just go "Hmmm that looks like a catalytic converter right there, no need to test the fumes from the exhaust! I really wonder what makes that car sound so loud!" lolol
Not to mention the different odor of fuel a car without a cat has.
Not that I passed any inspection, but I would logically think that its not only a visual inspection, that would be useles...
