^ I have to agree. I'd go with JL audio over Alpine.

I'd tell you Alpine because of price, but you just can't get better than a JL Sub. It pounds just right.

Been running type R's for years and always been happy. They can take abuse and perform well throughout the entire audio range. Thats where I would put my money.

You should just go with a single 12w6 or w7 if jl and alpine are the only options.

I've run both. T
he JL's are typically 1.5 ohm voice coils. So when you wire them, you end up at 3 ohms or .75 ohms usually. So if you have an amp capable of being stable at .75 ohms, the JL will deliver, but your amp will suffer from all the heat. I had a 13w7 in a sealed box running off a jl1000, and also a jl45/4 powering all infinity kappa components. The whole car would shut off at stop lights when a long bass note played.
The alpine type R's a I have 2 in our 06 dodge charger with a hifonics 1200watt amp. It hits hard. Better than the single 13w7 for sure.
but my favorite setup i think was the old red GA with 2 JL 12w3's running off a kenwood 600watt amp. I don't know why, but this setup was awesome. and i had a 2nd amp for mids and highs, and it didn't make my car shut off at a light.
JL amps are power hungry mofos.
I'm actually shopping for a new system for the alero. I need 2 matching amps and 2 12s. I'm leaning towards hifonics amps and alpine 12's again if that tells you anything.
edit: holy old thread!!! sorry for my zombie thread folks lol

You have good taste that's for sure. And also good choosing in the enclosure type. You just say "Alpine or JL" you didn't specify Type S vs WX or Type X vs W7. So based on my personal opinion, and I've ran both. I would say JL. I feel they have more SQ value than Alpine and can get just a couple HZ lower than Alpine. But IMO you're gonna be happy with either. And I think the deciding factor should be which is gonna be the better deal.
Also if you're gonna run JL be sure you have a beast of an amp because JL's LOVE power
