I went with a red caliper and black bracket, I've never had red caliper and i like the look of them. When you do a big brake upgrade you want to show them off. Red isn't a flashy way of showing them off but pops nicely, plus my car is red so it looks nice since it matches. If anything yellow and green is too flashy. I actually see more black calipers around here then red, red is rare around here.

I'm doing the big brake upgrade and went with Blue calipers and black brackets, both glossy paint. I'm also doing the rear disc brake upgrade and painted the rear hubs black as well with Blue calipers. I got all of the prep work and painting done over the weekend and hope to do the install next weekend or later this week.

I know you would use high heat paint (engine enamel, caliper paint) but do you have to prime the calipers first? if so, is there a high heat primer? And after you paint, would you apply a clear coat? If so, would there also be a high heat clear?

Nope. That caliper paint is pretty tough stuff. Clean them good, maybe sand a little, and spray it on! No need for primer or clear coat or any of that stuff with it.

I cleaned my calipers really good (spent some time cleaning them)

No need to prime before painting and no need to clear-coat after painting. Just make sure that you take your time when painting and make sure to use several coats. Mine came out nicely.

Can I use brake cleaner or does it have to be something else?

Use brake cleaner along with a steel wire brush to scrub off the brake dust buildup. That will work best. Once the calipers are as clean as you can get them then you can paint them.

Yes...you can use brake cleaner. I spent the extra time to clean mine up with a wire brush on an air drill, but they were off the car and in a mess because I got them from the junk yard.

Note that not all brands of caliper paint protect to the same temperature rating. Duplicolor only protects to 900 degrees, but VHT protects up to 2000 degrees.

I work at Pepboys so I got my caliper paint from the store I work at. I personally used Dupli-Color paint and I would recommend it to you. It comes in red or black variants. Also the Dupli-Color paint withstands up to 500 degrees which is well over enough.

That's because Pepboys only has Duplicolor and doesn't stock VHT caliper paint.
