I am new to the site but not new to the car.
Hello! I just got on the site a couple of days ago and find it great. After reading some of your troubleshooting threads I think you guys may be the one to get my second Alero up on the road. First I have a 2004 GLS Sedan. I bought the car in 2006 and maintained the poop out of it. Three weeks ago I picked up another 2004 GS with a bad 2.2l in it. I bought a replacment engine from a 2005 Cav. with 35 thousand on it. Now this car is 100 precent complete and ready to roll but the engine will not get spark. I have tested the PCM, ICM, and even the BCM. Not sure if the engine being from the cav is not communicating with the Alero or what the problem is. Could the security system have locked the car out? This raises alot of questions about the 2.2 that was in the car so I plan to tear it down and see just what happend to cause that engine to drop.

Welcome to the site.
I'm not sure why you're not getting spark but if the security system was acting up it would shut off the gas not the spark and you should have a flashing security light.

ok welcome to the site... try that...if your security light is on that maybe your problem... turn the key to on and wait about 10 minutes,,, the light will go off by itself... then turn the key to off .... then start the engine..

Ok. I checked the security system on the car and that checked out good. I did speak to the dealership on the car and though they will not help me bacause of the engine swap they did say that the PCM will more likley need a reflash. Just when you think you have everything and you have spent your last dime up comes a surprise. Anyone know any good deals on a reflash tool? Guess I can't complain that I only have 2 grand invested and all parts under 40 thousand. Oh and that I have two Aleros.

We pulled the plugs kept them connected and laid them accross a ground source and checked for spark. Also used a meter and we had no power of any kind comming to them.

It's the PCM.
Wrong wiring, Wrong VIN.
Yes a reflash will fix everything

I'm assuming that the engine was replaced, along with the PCM to make everything work (engine and tranny), the PCM came out of the donor car, which has a different VIN than the Alero.

PCM is the original but I can get the PCM from the Cavy. The engine and trans came from a salvage yard in Jonesboro Arkansas. So if I use the PCM from the Cavy this should fix the problem? I could just have the Alero one flashed if need be.

Well im running a cavy pcm on my alero and its running the motor fine, so that tells your wiring harness should be working with your stock pcm.

It has occurd to me that this could have been the original problem with the car. After this tear down I may have a complete 2.2 extra on my hands. I dont know anything about the history of the car cause it's a bank repo. I payed 400 dollars for it and it looks good. I will post some pics.

Hmmm I would suggest you defenetly try a different pcm if thats the case. I hope you went over common stuff before ruling that the engine was bad to begin with.

Nope, Like a fool I took their word for it. However, I only paid 450 for the new engine and tranny combo.
