It may spool a little slower due to it being further away from the direct exhaust pulses, plus the distance will dissipate the heat, so the turbo wouldn't be using the heat energy as well. It can be done though, just a pain to run all that charge piping I would think. It's been done on a 4 cylinder Cavalier, so the 3400 is more than capable of using this system, it's just all about turbo size.
You mention not using an intercooler....you'd actually still need one. The turbo may be taking in fresh air outside the engine bay, but it still heats up when it gets compressed. In that respect, it's no different than having a turbo in the engine bay with the intake in the fender or through a hood scoop.
