Oil change frequency question
I started trying to do my oil changes every 3000 miles or at least once a year, the Volvo calls for 7500 miles or once a year, although I'm going to do that at 3000 miles because IDK what kind of oil they put in it (bought it from a Chrysler/Jeep lot)
According to the date, both the Alero and Delta were due on Sept 1. Neither car has 3000 miles on the oil change. They both run fine, but the Alero is maybe 1000 miles away, the Delta is around 1500 away.
Is it safe to wait until May 1 (one year) if I don't hit 3000 mile before then? I've been reading YES, but I want to make sure.
(Accroding the the Delta's owner's manual. That is a 7500 mile oil change intervial too. Wow, way back in 1985!!
If I only drove back and forth to work for a year, I would only put 1600 miles on my car

Haha. Oil tech has come a long way. What has been recommended to by by RVrs is leave ur oil till u pull the vehicle out of storage. Then change the oil. Don't bother starting it unless u can really work it to burn off the moisture as just starting it for 5 minutes will create more moisture with the heat change. Once again that's just what iv read.

So many people throw money away on oil. 6k mile interval is the new standard for most. Any sooner and you might as well light your money on fire because you are wasting oil. That said, oil does break down over time so at least annually change it.

I wait until the light tells me to change it. On my Escort, which has no light, I change it every 7,500 miles.

I changed the oil when i had the Alero between 5k-6k. When i finally let her to pasture she had over 180k and engine ran great. (the rust, wheel bearings, no longer working electronics is why she had to go). If you are changing at 3k religiously save your money and buy beer with it and start changing at 6k.

I go by the owner's manual:
Change engine oil and filter as indicated by the GM Oil Life System (or every 12 months, whichever occurs first). Reset the system. The system will show you when to change the oil -- usually between 3,000 miles (5 000 km) and 7,500 miles (12 500 km) since your last oil change. Under severe conditions, the indicator may come on before 3,000 miles (5 000 km).
Never drive your vehicle more than 7,500 miles (12 500 km) or 12 months without an oil and filter change.

My light comes on @ 10km every time I have keep tracked in the back of the repair manual since 2008. I use to change it at 5km but stopped after the first year thinking it a waste money. been changing it when light comes on and have had no issues the Alero runs great.

I never listen to what the manual says lol 3000 miles is my limit. Even with fully syn oil that says 7500 mile changes. Still do 3000.

^^ I'm with this guy, I change every 4 months or 5,000kms on full synthetic. I know its kinda wasteful, but unless I send it to a testing facility, this is how its gonna go till that happens!
Just so you get what is going on here, that is 33 cents a day if I change it every 4 months! It bloody cost more than that in fuel just to start the thing each day!

HA, even as a daily driver the Alero could have gone once a year.
My Delta's owner's manual says the SAME THING, and that was in 1985

Lets look at one of GMs more recent screw up shal we...lol
The 3.6L VVT in the CTS 2004-2007 especially, both the regular 220hp version and the HO 255hp version. Factory programmed for 7500kms oil changes. This was more than the chains could handle. I saw at least 3 a week for two years having chains replaced. They would stretch and throw cam timing off setting a DTC for phasing. Once chains were replaced the PCM was reprogrammed to set oil lamp at 5000kms... Just saying, don't trust that dam manual for everything!
