Tire and rim size +1

Hey All,

Thin king of spending most of my refund on rims and tires. I was hoping to go +1 up to a 17" rim and tire. My question is...

Will a 17" rim and a 225/50/17 fit without any rubbing on the 2001 Alero GLS sedan.

S8track16 02-22-2014 12:34 PM

I currently have 17s on 205/50/17 and they don't rub. I think it also depends on the rims (i.e. offset, spacing)

mfuller 02-22-2014 12:50 PM

It might be very close but I can't say for sure.
Staying with a 50 series tire on a 17 inch rim might put the tire too close to the lower spring perch on the strut.

negolien 02-22-2014 12:54 PM

17x7.5 - 42 offset / 72.6 hub so maybe good idea to go with 45's?

[ion] C2 02-22-2014 03:04 PM

225/50 is what I use on a 17x7.5 wheel with +42mm offset. It works fine.

Why do you have such a small tire? They came stock with 225.

I think I answered this before but I bought the tires and rims together and haven't changed them yet. They were from a cobalt.

negolien 02-22-2014 07:27 PM

I seen the ones I want with 225 and 215 both 45 and 50. Just not sure about the 45's won't that be a little to low pro? Don't want to be bending the new rims lol. Firestone is having a sale thinking of getting the firehawks..

Ahh now I know

No it's plenty fine. I had 225/45 for years. Recently changed to 225/50 because it looks better, fills things up a bit more to close the gap in the wheel well. Preference.

negolien 02-22-2014 08:28 PM

any thoughts on these rims in 17...can't afford anything super special but with the firehawks I think these would look ok I run the gold alero. Also what's the deal with the caps? They have one for sale for a little extra but don't say or show what the difference is?

MMGT1 02-22-2014 08:47 PM

I ran 235/45/17 and had no problems

im running 225/40/18's and I have about a half inch between the bottom of the strut and my tire, the only issue I have right now is there's WAY too much space between the fender and the top of the tire so I'm thinking about dropping it about an inch to an inch and a half

Those are ghetto fabulous.....

I cant stress this enough to people who put wheels on these cars. GET A SPORTY WHEEL!

03glgold 02-23-2014 11:11 AM

I think the gold looks best with black or gun metal...i think that to a certain extent my chrome wheeels make the car too bright

S8track16 02-23-2014 11:48 AM

I really want to get some Rota Grids in a gunmetal color.

Do you know if a 9.5 inch rim would fit on the alero if the offset was around 0?

What do you mean by Sporty? I am not trying to put 24's on it and look ghetto either. Just isn't very many rim shops online and there wasn't a ton of choices for me on tire rack.

03glgold 02-23-2014 01:06 PM

in 30 seconds i found one that is better and costs less than that one

negolien 02-23-2014 01:07 PM

well that's in your opinion/shrug I liked the other one from that site.

03glgold 02-23-2014 01:10 PM

if you went with the black it would be a bit better still not great, but I would never even touch the chrome ones...in the end it is your car so get what you like, but be sure it will look good on your car because what looks good on its own might not look so great once it has the car sitting on it

negolien 02-23-2014 01:19 PM

Thanks I will keep looking could you explain what you dislike about chrome? Just not wanting to spend 1K on rims that are plain jane and don't look better than the stock one.

negolien 02-23-2014 01:59 PM

Thanks for the web links got a lot more choices now. These aren't bad for my taste.
I hate the extra lug nut holes though.

03glgold 02-23-2014 02:03 PM

I have a gold one as well and currently have the flat spoke chrome gls wheels and the chrome makes the car appear too light in color...I like chrome on some things but don't think it goes with the gold.

Well since my wheels sit about flush with the fender... that combination will make you poke over 2.5 inches out, which, apart from looking silly, your tires will definitely collide with the fender and bumper up front when you turn the wheel left or right.

If anyone needs any other comparisons let me know.

guiguilandry 02-24-2014 11:17 AM

the biggest and widest you can go on an alero IF you have a drop is what I have... 255/30zr19 on a 19 x 8,5 34mm offset... it does not rub or scrape... and I have about 3 in drop from my coilovers...

tw0123 02-24-2014 11:35 AM

I can vouch the rub of bigger... i had a set of 20's with 245/40/20 tires... not 100% on the offset but i had to use a 1" spacer on the rear to clear the lower spring perch...however, they rubber on the rear fender when i went over bumps til i rolled the fender... for some reason the front only rubber by about 1/4" but only when the tires were warm... they never rubbed the fender when i turned though... i was also lowered 1.2" on eibach's...

yeah i had 28mm spacers on the front with my 7.5" +42 wheels and they rubbed when turning. your combination makes it similar to me having 21mm spacers which would likely clear fine.

S8track16 02-24-2014 01:20 PM

Thanks ion, I find that my current rims sit inside the fender quite a bit now and would like to get some new ones to make it a bit more flush.

03glgold 02-24-2014 01:30 PM

if you like the rims and don't already have them you could do some spacers

negolien 02-24-2014 02:14 PM

Anyone know what style ASA rims these are?

sleepyalero 02-24-2014 02:36 PM

ASA model AR9

http://wheelworx.com.au/asa_wheels.html

Good luck finding a set. I think they might be discontinued. Tried finding a site selling them. Came up short. .. only things I saw sellomg was bimmer forums, acura forums, saab forun etc...

[ion] C2 02-24-2014 02:37 PM

Probably "Asa AR9 with spoke Inserts Machined w/Anthracite Accent & Carbon Fiber" like the image description says on the sidebar even though the site is down

negolien 02-24-2014 03:14 PM

Hum now to find some for sale lol

Redog 02-24-2014 03:30 PM

S8track16 02-24-2014 04:23 PM

One more question, my rims are 17x7 with 42mm offset. Would 235/45/17 tires work? I found a new set of Hercules Raptis tires for around $90 each.

[ion] C2 02-24-2014 05:15 PM

yeah 235/45 makes them about the same overall diameter as 225/50, the width/offset is fine too
