New to Alero

Hey, I'm Joe, new to cars period
Trying to start off with the alero my pops bought me, people saying it can't be done, and thats its not worth it. If I can just get it to look nicer then half the trash rolling in newport news, I'll be good.

2002 Alero, going over to a friends house to figure out the other stats for it.

Any hints, help and well shops to check out, feel free to assist =)

I was told the the previous owner built the engine himself.. so idk what I can do there.

kwhauck 10-01-2009 11:02 AM

Weclome to the site, you will learn a lot of info about the car here, that I promise you.

Also, people say it can't be done and full of shit, we have 3 Aleros on here running in the 13's and 2 more will be there soon (more tuning required) With a car that runs the 1/4 mile in the 16's stock.

You'll hear that a lot. People think that if it's not an "off-the-shelf" car it can't be done

lighter cars.........and a bigger community and that is why you see the difference in results, for every serious alero buildup you have 25 cavalier buildups simply because of the sheer numbers....

I think our list is pretty impressive.

Sorry to disappoint ya.. its a sedan. (4 doors)
Also, took a peek under the hook, and saw 3400 right above the enigine, which I think makes it this.. http://sites.google.com/site/aleromo...ngine/la1-3400
Don't know how to check but it does have the cover.
Its a automatic (Didn't think it would matter, but I guess it kinda does."
Front Wheel drive, Think its a GL, leather steering wheel?

Anything else I should try and check out?
And, also is the air filter the easiest/best first upgrade, go from the box filter, to the cone or air breather?

Jruks 10-01-2009 01:23 PM

cherrington17 10-01-2009 01:33 PM

heres a question for him (for us, to help him) is the previous owner did in fact do engine work... how could you ever know? by "engine work" that could be the LIM fix, or a full headswap.

welcome aboard dude. The first step is easy. look around, check out other mods that people have done, and decide where you want to go with your car.

after that, beat the search button like it owes you money, and keep us posted with what you've done. (or ask questions about how you go about doing something)

bkathsalero 10-01-2009 01:35 PM

Trade in for a coupe

jayson_waltz 10-01-2009 01:37 PM

if its says 3400, the its the LA1 3400, nuff said. they never came with a stick. I'm gonna go on a limb and say if its a 3.4 with a leather steering wheel its probably a GL2.

air filter is usually the most common first upgrade, but get a full system with a cone filter. the stock system is super restrictive even with a replacement filter. from there lots of the 3.4 guys go with a exhaust system with flowmaster 40 series.

o yea, and clear your corners

Jruks 10-01-2009 01:38 PM

Before I go anywhere, and start slamming the search button, I have 180k miles on the sucker. That mean anything big? And if I could find a way to get ahold of the guy who owned it last I would. Got it through my dad's mechanic for 3k about year and half ago.

cherrington17 10-01-2009 01:40 PM

depends on what the guy had done. some 3400s croak around mid 200k...

but if he had the engine rebuilt.. then there is nothing to worry about.

jayson_waltz 10-01-2009 01:40 PM

^x2. but if its just the limg fix, you are running shorter on life. if should go to the mid 200k mark tho, but with a ton of miles i wouldn't repeatedly rev the pis out of it, unless the whole engine has been rebuilt already, then your good.

Jruks 10-01-2009 01:43 PM

alrighty, going to try and figure this out what all the guy did.
And ima look up the exhaust system you mentioned Jayson, see if I can find it cheap around me, or online. Along with how to

Nate's Alero 10-01-2009 05:26 PM

157K not nice to my 3400, when i did my LIMG swap, i poured out about 7 Quarts of antifreeze and about 4 oil.... no knocks, no ticks, no nuthin :coolio:

best of all, 300$ baby

Jruks 10-01-2009 08:10 PM

Tomorrow, I am going to clear my corners =)
That'll be my first project.
Then after that, maybe just by a cone air filter until I get the money to get a exhaust system.

kwhauck 10-01-2009 11:36 PM

don't clear your corners, dare to be different.....

Well, I am trying to figure out what color bulbs are illegal in va, so I can be different, I don't want the led lights, cause I think they are a pita, so why try to be a pita lol. I dunno why they clear the corners, but it will provide a constant color, like the rest of the car. Thought it has to be like that lol, but now that I know I can pop the amber out it'll give me a something to do

AleroDrime 10-02-2009 12:08 AM

Jruks 10-02-2009 06:18 PM

Decided don't want to mess with looks quiet yet, going to try and find a place that sells a air filter, cone. around me, cleared the corners, going to have to put pics up later.

kwhauck 10-02-2009 06:32 PM

undecided02 10-02-2009 09:46 PM

welcome to the site. My 3400 has 178000km on it and has had no problems thus far, kind of luck of the draw. clear your corners, slap on some chrome rims and go limo tint all round.

Jruks 10-03-2009 12:51 AM

Im not focused on looks for now, wanna make the car run better, and faster first, then once I get it running like I want, ima make it perty

limo tint all around... is illegal in EVERY state.

each has its own specifics on what can be done. follow those, everyone gets a ticket for it sooner or later.

The alero doesn't look too bad by its self, as long as theres no bad scratches and dents. Also, the looks are going to be the easiest, I think, for me to be able to do. I'd rather start off simple under the hood, and from there, get more and more complicated.

JLw7123 10-03-2009 09:46 AM

You bought the alero stock I like your ideas of starting slow and build from there

Jruks 10-03-2009 10:05 AM

Thanks guys =)
So, since I want to change the air filter, out into a cone filter, instead of my box. I would have to get a short ram intake, correct? Because I am looking at andysautosport and when I chose the alero, there is no short ram intake, but for the grand am, there is.. there a big deal?
