Well, how loud do you want it? Is it for performance or just sound?
I got a magnaflow, cuz once the headers are on, sounds pretty good. Not too loud (ie flowmaster) and not too quiet (ie borla). Figured it was a good compromise.

I just got my custom catback done today. I have a 3400 with a cold air intake. i went to a performance exhaust shop. I ended up leaving the cat with the stock resonator behind it. they used two and a quarter inch piping and put on a Reactive muffler. It sounds really good. It has a nice deep tone and is not too loud, but loud enough to show off. A flowmaster would be way to loud. either the reactive or the magnaflow are perfect and about the same price. hope this helps....feel free to ask any questions

You have to keep in mind that the muffler isn't the only thing that goes into a exhaust and it all depends on the driver what they think sounds good or not. There are a lot of variables, like, the size and type of piping, if you get a high flow cat or take it off, keep the resonator or take it off. I happen to really like mine, but i cant say that one thing is better than the other.

I've used Magnaflow on my smaller cars. I have the Flowmaster 40's on my Cutlass, and they are sweet! I had some on the Mustang as well, but it was way too droney. :( I had borla on an explorer I owed, and it sounded really good, too.
I haven't picked anything out for the Alero yet.

Jackal since i installed the headers and had the highflow cat put on, its alot louder now, and i have the high end rasp now, but in 2 weeks i go to an 80 series so i'm hoping that will cure the rasp. i wont have to deal with the rasp to much longer, i'm buying the DPP 10psi turbo kit soon.

whats the inlet size for the alero muffler (stock) 2 1/4 ?

I don't think so, Ronin....I can't remember exactly, but if memory serves me correctly, my stock piping was something like 2 inch, that would make the ID like 1 7/8"?
Don't quote me on this, but I think the Pontiac Grand Am GTs got the 2.25" exhausts, where the Grand Am SEs and our Aleros got the smaller, 2" exhaust setups....even the SEs and Aleros with the 3400. :(

i'd liek to know what the 3400 soudns liek with 2.5 in. piping and no resonator and no cat.

meh i'll keep the cat just cause im a hippie i guess, if it all coems down to it i'll simply buy a high flow cat, but no need for that at the moment.
all i wanna know is, has anyone taken thier muffler and resonator off? and whats it sound like

i pulled my EGR off... did i ever show you that video? sounds like a pro stock dragster... lol.
but i say keep the muffler, order the SLP 2.5" pipe (call them, they'll sell just the pipe) and delete your res.

as far as i know they don't do that anymore, you can only order the whole system....

yeah SLP excludes the res anyway you shl00b :P . anyways, i thought SLP stopped sellign thier stuff individually, cause too many people wanted the pipe and only the pipe, never the muffler. correct me if im wrong on that.
i was thinking of the camaro style dual exhaust but at this point, the single muffler single out seems fine.
also i believe my muffler is 2.25 inlet so i mgiht have to buy a new one.

still up for the no res and muffler idea..........i'd also love to delete out my EGR, but i do not have the money for a new PCM or someone who can jizz weld the holes shut.

well i think if you can get 2.25 mandrel bent, you'd be better off as far as flow than 2.5 non-mandrel bent.
i'd still call slp, it doesnt hurt to try.

you should just do what i'm gonna do, test pipe in place of the cat, and then about 21 inches of straight pipe after that ending with a slight down tip right before the first 90degree turn in the stock alero exhaust system, i also will have a little makeshift hanger in there somewhere.....total my new " exhaust system" or lack there of will cost me like $50......
yeah it will be loud but i like it like that
oh yeah and i have an extra SLP tip that i am gonna mount in the rear purely for cosmetic purposes......

sounds not much louder w/o it. WTF! (only 1000-2500 rpm appear to sound deeper)
SO NOW TELLME GUYS HOW TO WELD THE poopTY UNIVERSAL MADE FLOWMASTER OR STH LIKE THAT ON THIS DAM CROOKED TUBE THERE?? SUM PICS? PLZ?

today around noon (GMT +1), i got tired of sitting around talking about exhaust, so i decided to do something about it. I got out the welder, and then cut out my resonator, and welded a straight piece of tube in it's place. it doesnt sound much louder, as i was expecting a little more, although it is a little deeper around 1000-2500 rpms.
so if you could enlighten me as to how exactly i weld a universal style flowmaster, or similar on the curved tube that remains after removing the stock muffler. pictures would help, if you have them.
i would like a decent exhaust note, thanks from germany.... ronin
