I have an 2000 GLS, and the carpet stinks, has since I bought it used, and recently read of a site on here that sells replacements. My question is, how hard is it to switch the carpet out, is it just a matter of taking out the seats and placing it in, or is it a whole other step which will leave me in an "uh oh" state. Thanks in an advance

Justin

seats, the plastic trim around the bottom of the doors, and the center console. I think there's a little more...not sure. This is just my experience of seeing the edge of the carpet from taking poop out.

when you buy new carpet.. it don't come with holes. So when you get the replacement carpet, You will need to cut your own holes out for the center console, seats, bolts to the seat belt, But the only thing is they need to be accurate cut or else your lefted with a oversize hole which makes it look ugly. I changed out 2 carpets; 1st time it was electric blue, now 2nd time i got white carpet. 1st time it took me 6 hrs to cut all the holes out cuz it was first time. 2nd time white carpet took me 45 min to cut all the holes. I've learned from my mistakes in putting in the 1st carpet. Plus 2nd time around is always faster.

^ 6 hours!!?? :o

It would seem to me that taking the old carpt out & placing it on top of the new carpet would make placing, marking, & cutting the holes relatively painless.

^you're probably doing too thick of coats. Also, if you use spray dye rather than paint it dries really fast.

no that wouldn't work. Stock carpet has a rubberish molded layer on the back of it. So it stays in form. Aftermarket carpet doesn't have that. So if u trace the holes they aren't gonna line up.

Aftermarket ^^^

I took pics of them side by side together, but i guess i lost that pic when my laptop died. I lost a bunch of old pics.

Without the rubber liner like the stock one has, the aftermarket carpet is a few pounds lighter too. The stock carpet will never lose its mold shape form. I know, I had a bunch of wires in under the stock carpet. You can't tell their under there. Aftermarket carpet, You'll notice a slight bludge cuz the rubber liner is isn't there to keep it in form. LOL

^ interesting.. thanks! I wonder if the aftermarket carpet can be applied to the liner on the stock carpet? Have you tried to remove the stock carpet from the rubber liner?

its cut to fit but not the holes......it would be too hard to get it right everytime.........and it would be hard to mass produce them and get the holes cut out perfectly everytime.......

Look around on the net. There are companies that make the aftermarket to size of OEM and include the backing and holes. I replaced my carpet in a 95 ford taurus about seven years ago. My first purchase was the cheap aftermarket that is sized only. The carpet is very thin, shows bulges and wears easy. It cost more money, but I then found a OEM match. You could even purchase it with mercedes class carpet. If I recall correctly, I paid about 160 without shipping for a exact OEM (1/4 plush) carpet.

Alright, i will have to look for that. I appreciate it! Do you think it would be smart to call the dealership and get a quote from them? or would it be too expensive?

Sorry guys for not getting back with ya about the replacement carpet. What i sell is not a cheap thin easy to wear carpet. It is made by ACC and i have it in my alero for about 3 years and have not had any problems. The cost is $137.00 plus $10 shipping. Click here for colors (http://www.accmats.com/products/carpet_types/cutpile.htm)
Let me know if you would like to order it.
