This may be a dumb question but can anyone tell me how to change the fuel filter and how hard it is to do.

It on the end of the fuel rail near the alternator. It has a plastic cap over it.

Don't feel bad I never changed mine til about a month ago. 70000 miles on the original fuel filter.

How ironic, I just picked up a fuel filter today to do mine. Shouldn't be too bad, I didn't even plan on using ramps, I can squeeze and operate on it without em :P

OK, On the 2.2l ecotec, the Schraeder gas pressure release jumps right out at you. If you still have all the fancy stickers and stuff, there's a yellow lable on it with a gas can. It's directly in front of the oil fill cap on the valve cover. (towards fornt of car) I just used a tire pressure gauge to let the pressure out. Was just a bit of a fine mist, didn't last too long. About a minute.

If you're using crescent wrenches for the fuel filter, make sure they're big enough for the nuts, but small enough to turn. a bit of a tight squeeze.

Alright folks. I did it, replaced my fuel filter.

If you followed that link. Goggles are a must. You can release most of the pressure, but not all of it :P

Be care unsnapping the clip on the left side of the fuel filter (it's green on the 2.2 ecotech) I used needle nosed pliers to push it in a bit, to release the lock (it snaps together, need to squeeze a bit to release) And then installing the new filter, you need to squeeze it hard enough to snap. It will snap, just line it up enough. My fram fuel filter came with a transparent clip on it. If you're using it on the 2.2l ecotech, scrap it. It's not intended for this application :)

I'm not a mechanic, I'm just a handyman. If I can do it, just about anyone can.

Good luck, feel free to contact me if you have any issues and need some input.

I didn't release the pressure from the hose or place a bucket underneath the gas line so I changed it while lying in a puddle of gas. Got a nice chemical burn on my back from it. It burned like a bad sunburn for a couple of days.

my fuel filter was replaced @ 102,000................and it was still pretty clean.

i think a lot has to due with the type of gas you run. but normally i would change it at least every 50k

PS, Remove your gas cap along with releasing pressure from the fuel line, that will help release any excess pressure

you dont have to relieve the fuel pressure under the hood......theres no pressure between the gas tank and filter, and filter and fpr, but between the fpr and injectors is where there is constant pressure no matter what....you dont need to relieve it under the hood, but you do need to pull off the cap, i mean theres a little bit when you do that but not a lot......ive done this 3 times......always the same......and the first time i wasnt wearing goggles, so yea, it wasnt pretty.............

are you talking about a 2.4 or 2,2?

I guess you don't have to follow safety precautions. But they are their for a reason :) It doesn't hurt.
Just make sure you have your ignition on for a few minutes to let your fuel pump run to repressurize the lines. I did it twice (forgot some wrenches at work, had to wait and do it later) And it started on the first try after relieving the pressure. I just let it prime up first..

U'm not knocking you Big D. Just saying any published resource I've read, or mechanic I've asked; told me it's their standard procedure for fuel injected engines

lol and it also tells you to disconnect your battery even when your rotating your wheels.........and changing your oil.........but who follows that, all im saying is once you have opened the fuel door theres no pressure there, like i said ive done it a few times and always the same, i get fuel from the tank side line, and none from the fpr side line, solely because the rearend is jacked up but if it were pressurized that wouldnt matter...........and im talking about the 3.4, maybe its different for the 4 bangers, that i am unsure of.........

The 2.4 doesn't even have a schrader valve. I've replaced mine 3 times already.
