Waterpump Replacement

good thing i did this now, after i pulled it off i found it had begun to leak through the weephole. the R&R wasn't bad, the new one was a different design, and i flushed the block and radiator and i'm running 50/50 water/waterwetter, i'll let you know the results of the cooling temp difference. when i get a chance to go for a good drive.

tossed my hood liner in the trash just cause it was cheap and tacky.

anyways how did you know that you needed to change the water pump? what symptoms did it give?

sprays coolant out of the weep hole all over the engine bay is number 1 clue. it can also make noise, whining all sorts really. other than that. overheating issues etc.

i didn't know, i decided to change it since i was doing a coolant change-over to water wetter, the only thing i noticed was it was running warmer at highway speed. now it barely gets past 180.

and it never sprayed coolant , i justed noticed the weephole when i got it off.

Ya I had about the same number of miles on mine when it went. Seems to be yet another issue with the Olds. Im geussing it has to do with the Dex, but Im no expert.

i'd blame faulty craftsmanship before i'd blame dex.

i had a coolant leak somewhere, and it wasnt LIM, i'm guessing it was this, but i went with the cheap temp fix... alumiseal

I replaced mine when I noticed the leak under the car and when I opened the hood there was a line where coolant was dripping on a belt and when the engine was running and the belts were spinning it would spray on the hood liner

i was incorrect about the temp it runs consistant 190.

how hard was it to replace and what had to come off to get at it?

waterpump is easy, break the 4 pulley bolts loose, remove the belt remove the pulley, unbolt/remove the waterpump, i could have done it in about 20 mins, had the gasket come off cleanly, but i had to scrape and sand, all in all, drain flush r&r and refill took about an hr.

^^ it's super simple to replace the water pump
remove the belt
remove the 4 or 5 bolts holding on the pulley
remove the water pump bolts
clean and dry the gasket surface
puts some blue rtv on the gasket surfaces
bolt in the new pump
bolt on the pulley
put the belt back on
in 3-4 days re check the pulley bolts to make sure they're still tight (learned that one the hard way)

mine took SLIGHTLY longer because i took it as an opportunity to change my belt to a gatorback so i did that at the same time. not much longer, maybe 10 minutes.

yeah i got a little upset when i discovered you have to raise the motor and remove the front motor mount plate to change the belt. what are you supposed to do if it breaks on a trip?

bend over and take it up the tailpipe at a shop? ud be almost better seeing if you could find an autozone or pepboys and buying a jack and a small ratchet set

i did it at my shop, took a whole 20 mins with proper equipment.
