Trans.

Yep...trans finally bit the dust. Burnt clutches and all. I decided to play the rebuild safe - I'm staying with the stock 35 tooth drive/driven sprokets and diff (to keep the 3.05 final drive) but I'm loading it with Raybestos Blue Plate clutches. They should hold.

B&C's Transmissions in Machesney Park, IL. They do quite a bit of high-performance rebuilds, including one for a 8-second Grand National that was in GM High Tech Performance a while back.
The car is now back in my garage, after 1 week and about $1800 smackers. Diagnosis: burnt torque converter clutch and drive clutches, worn bands, and under-performing shift and line pressure control solenoids. So everything got replaced, plus I have all the latest GM updates for the valve body. Of course there's a new filter and they did a power flush off all the tranny fluid. Rockin' Redline D4 ATF now.
The car shifts kinda weird, although firmly, but I'm told that is quite normal, especially while the Blue Plates break in.

I'm going to say the part that's missing is an aluminum flywheel w/ CM stage 3 kevlar clutch :P

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you think a standard rebuild would cost at like an AAMCO or something. I think mines on its way out right now. It slides into 2nd gear under firm (not WOT) pedal pressure. That and the fact that I can NOT burn tire AT ALL by punching the gas. With Full exhaust mods, CAI and DHP, I would think I could at least chirp tire. Heck, when I first bought the car it smoked tire 1000% better stock than it does right now. So i'm suspecting that it's starting to go. Also, do I have to get it built up stronger with just the mods I have right now? I'm not planning on doing any boost or nitrous or anything in the future.

Oh, also, I forgot to ask, when removing the tranny, did you have to remove any of the headers? I know TOG has a cross over pipe that could be removed, but my S&S are 2 peices. I was wondering if I would have to remove the front header too to get it off.

Yeah, that was kinda the idea...:duh:

3400 5pd's are absolutly awesome! Too bad they don't make one stock :(

The top 2 tranny bolts are almost impossible to get to with the crossover/header in place - I suppose you could TRY, but it's prolly gonna be faster to remove the front header. You can see that he did remove the crossover in the picture to get his tranny out.

Believe me...I'd give my left nut to have a manual transmission in this car, but it'd cost at least twice as much to get it done right, and who knows how long it would take. I've resolved to just buying new cars with manual transmissions, as conversions just aren't worth it.
The front header does have to come off to remove the transmission, no doubt about it.
