I have a 2004 4dr with an ecotec and 5 speed tranny. I was wondering if it would be ok to tow a 6'x12' u-haul trailer from maine to south carolina? i'm installing a class II hitch. any suggestion is appreciated.
Thanks ,
Nick

Look in your owner's manual. I think the 4 cyl is rated for 1,000lbs. I'd be surprised if UHaul would rent that to you with an Alero. The trailer alone is at your tow rating, let alone anything you put in it.
That said, you could probly do it but you'd have to do it in 3rd gear at 60mph or less.

I believe the owners manual for the 5speed ecotec said "not recommended"

That trailer alone weighs like 1500 lbs and can carry like 5000 lbs of stuff. I would say no your alero won't do it. Rent a truck and a dollie or car trailer load the truck, and tow the 'ho.

Or you could get a u-haul truck with a tow dolley, and tow the alero behind with you.

no. dont do it. period. =/ towing limits are usually that-limits. Load a truck up with it's "limit" and it will not perform well at all and may wear it down. Years back, we were going to get a new car, a ho!! but we wanted jetskiis in the near future too, so we broke down and sold our everyday driver, the 94 stang conv V8, and got an SUV. Years later, we still got a ho, but for me =) things work out nicely.
