Mine done that and it was a wheel bearing. Just do a search and I am sure you will find that several people have had wheel bearing problems.

bearing...unless still on warranty, fix it yourself...you'll save about 150$ compared to a dealer
bearing, louder and louder from 20mph and up
determing the side, drive around 20-30 mph, turn the wheel left and right, if it happens when you turn right it's your left bearing, and vice versa
it's a weight transfer test, but it usually works
weight goes mostly to a side
wheel bearing at Autozone is 110 bucks USD.
pull wheel, 2 bolts on caliper, 2 bolts on caliper bracket, hang caliper aside
pull rotor, remove axle nut (36 mm socket?), remover 3 bolts off bearing, remove with 3 jaw puller or pull it if you can shimmy it off the axleshaft and get the axle back in.
reokace and reverse

Is this the same thing as when someone says they have a bad "hub"?

yes, in these cars, well at least the 2000 models the bearing isn't removable where you can just pull it out, grease it, and pop it back in. It's all one part with your wheel hub, your bearings go, your whole wheel hub needs replacing. I just did mine a few months ago.
P.S. I wouldn't suggest pulling the hub off the axle without a pulley, if you pull and yank on it too hard you could separate your inner CV joints and then your in trouble..lol.

 I am getting a noise too. Took it to the dealer and he said it was road noise and to get some good tires and it would go away. It's kinda like a thumping noise.

I might have a similar issue, but it is not a constant humming, and I don't think it is the hub. Only when I pull out of my drive, and over our curb do I get this sound, and I believe it is my front suspension. When I am on flat road turning I don't get any sounds whatsoever, and I know when I take it to the dealer, they are just gonna call me stupid, and tell me I MUST be imagining it.
Any ideas?

does it make that problem only when you're drifting, or all the time? heh

Seems to be only when I pull in or out of my drive. like when the suspension travels a bigger distance than just under normal driving. Thats why I know the dealer will just call me stupid and send me on my way.

Does it sound like an airplane taking off at higher speed? It's a hub. The left one if it goes away when you're turning right.
To know for sure, jack up that side and grab hold of the top and bottom of the tire. If you have any play in the wheel when you push/pull with opposite hands, that's your problem.
And all Aleros have the sealed hub assembly. I've replaced both of mine. So has my friend in her Malibu.

I had to get my hubs changed too. It's definitely the wheel bearing and it won't go away. It gets worse...at least mine did.
Prepare to dig deep into your wallet.

If you can do it yourself (or have a boyfriend who's dad owns a shop) the part is only a little over $100 at Autozone or similar.
At the very least don't take it to a dealer, they'll use the GM part that costs $350.

I have a 2003 Alero and experienced humming noise while turning, especially right. I checked the bearingsa and they were fine. (I work in a detroit area tire/full service repair shop) After clearing those out of the problem, I looked into the power steering. Although I had no Power steering fluid leak, I was quite low on fluid, and it solved the problem instantly. Check up on your car more frequently then the manual suggests. It also came from the factory with the rear brakes unadjusted. I have 50000 and the rear pads had no wear.
Gm was a bit complacent with their 100,000 mile maintenance free qoute.
Trans fluid also required replacement. On the tire issue, I have the original BFG traction T/A's, and they only have 3/32nds life left on them. My shop recommends replacing when they reach 4, most tires have a 7-9 tread life.
It's also important to rotate, which would help prevent the road noise. Not roatating your fronts to rear could cause them to cup or get choppy. Putting them in the rear will wear them evenly.
Hope this helps

Oh ya, and remember to tighten your brake calipers beck nice and tight when your done, I failed to tighten mine enough and I lossed one of my caliper bolts while I was driving down the road, not pretty...lmfao!!!

thanks for your help.
I actually talked to someone else who had an alero with the same problem. He said it wasn't the hub, but was the front drivers side shock/strut. He took his to a dealer and they did nothing about it, even after hearing it they said that it's normal wear and tear. Even though his only had 20k. So it looks like I am outta luck.

you can check to see if it's the hub. Jack up your car on the side of origin, right for right wheel. Chock your back wheel (so it doesn't roll). spin your wheel slowly by hand. Grab it by the edges (180 degrees from eachother) and shake it a bit. If it doesn't feel smooth (ignore the brake hiss) It's probably your bearing.

The check engine, abs trac control lights usually come on when the wheel bearing is going bad also but not always....I got the premium hub for 160 canadian and did it myself in 1 1/2 hours hard part was loosening the axle nut, but the hydraulic jack pushing on the ratchet made short work of that...one rap on the axle and the hub slid off the spline with ease, I would suggest putting antiseize compound on the splines for easy removal next time.....as the hubs seem to be an ongoing issue with aleros.
