ok, so heres the setup i have.
2003 2d alero
pioneer 7600 headunit
2 pod "A" pillar gauges (voltmeter and oil pressure)
and the newly installed 1400W Lanzar amp w/ 2 10" Fosgate He2

this just started the other day, i noticed i left my amp on (i have the remote wire connected to a switch and left the switch "on" for a few hours) so i turn it off, and start driving. its a short maybe 5 minute drive... half way there, my cd player turns off, then back on again, then off again, and back on... so i just turned it off. i started to watch my gauges and all seemed ok, voltage wise, and my other interior lights seemed fine.

now today, i was driving back on the thruway, (65+ mph) and after about 30 mintues of driving, my headunit acts up again. (keep in mind the amp has been off the majority of the time) And they whole setup worked fine on the 90 mintue drive to where i was going. BUT this time, i notice when i turned my headunit off, my gauges start to go nucking futz. they jump from 14.5V to 12V to 18V then turn off (both of them) them flicker back on, jumping from 10V-18V again, then off... i started to slow down and watch a little closer, checking my other lights and gauges, but nothing is happening anywhere... after about a mintue they stopped and stayed on.

WTF!?!

is this a battery problem...? maybe due to the half assed connection from the power wire of the amp to the battery? since i'm using the stock battery still....

or is my alternator going.... i really don't have a freak'n clue here. as soon as i get some free time i'm gonna head to a local car place and get both battery and alt. checked.... :pissed: :pissed: :pissed:

to me it sounds like your voltage regulator may be going.......the face your seeing 18 volts eliminates your battery because it cant go that high..........id say go to an auto store, autozone, or kragen, or whatever you guys have and ask them if they can check it.........im pretty sure the voltage regulators are internal so i dont know how hard it would be to replace just that......

well, i went and had the car checked out. autozone said its a bad battery. then i went across the street to advanced auto and had both battery and alt checked. (autozones alt checker was broke) and they said my alt was putting out 107A, so it was working over time, and the battery was a little low. and this was w/ the car running, no lights on, and no stereo or amp running.

i'm thinking i should upgrade to a red top. (preferably w/ the top and side posts, incase i decide to add more.)

is there a decent size i should look for?
