yeah it's normal
ac compressors suck a lot of power

Yeah. Especially if it's as nasty hot and humid there as it is here. That condenser can rob a lot of power when it has to suck that much water out of the air.

Yeah, there was actually a story on the news the other day about this. You're better off with the windows down city driving. But on the highway roll them up and turn the air on. Having the windows down creates more drag and sucks more gas than the AC does at those speeds.
I personally just suck it up and pay for the gas because I can't stand the heat.

I don't think its that hard to replace. Just wondering what year Alero you have and what engine it has? Mine seems slower this year with the ac on then it did last year.

you should watch mythbusters. it's better to drive with your windows down no matter what. there was HUGE difference between AC and windows down at ~55 where the windows down lasted a lot longer. they ran 2 identical cars each with 5 gallons till they wouldnt go anymore. i forget how much longer the windows down lasted but i wanna say it was like 15 miles or so, which is def considerable for 5 gallons.
p.s. nice contribution pawzbear! :hide:

So you have an Ecotec also..Thats what I was thinking. I have heard alot of issues with the Eco and O2 sensors going bad. My car just does not seem like it has the power it used to, plus it has a misfire sensation when driving at around 65mph and lightly press the gas to pull an incline or to pass someone. Now if I press harder and it kicks out of OD, its fine. But I have NO service engine soon light. I am still going to get it checked out. I have a feeling my o2 sensor is on its way out also.

They were only going 45. I saw the show and find it kinda hard to believe that is like a gallon's difference in an explorer (the test vehicle).
The O2 sensor is easy to replace. 1. jack up the front of the car. 2. crawl under and disconnect and unscrew the old one 3. screw the new one in and connect the harness 4. let the car down 5. turn off that SES light.
