i have a 2002 alero with a 5-apeed and an ecotec. When I shift into second gear it goes in fine. but when i accelerate at all it pops back out of gear. I have no problem getting into any other gears except reverse a little bit. I have a b&n short shifter in my car. Could my short shifter be adjusted wrong?

may have problems with a synchro, my truck did that, and one day on the highway the tranny took a dump

Yeah lots of ppl have had probs with the 2nd 3rd syncros. If indeed it is fully in gear it could be the cluth, as the syncro is not involved at taht point. You don't have a problem with any other gears, do you? Could also be a problem with the gear itself I suppose...

IF the eco B&M is like the 2.4 one then there really is not edjustment needed, but that is a possiblity i guess although you would have problems with other gears as well:?:

It doesn't do it in any other gear.
And I a pretty sure that the shifter in a 2.4 car is a different one. I think its a different transmission than the 2.4 twincam (if thats what they call it?) There is some adjustment on it, but I don't think that's what it is anymore. I have tried adjusting it in many different ways and nothing helps. :pissed:

Just my $.02 but it may be the clutch. My CRX did this when the clutch started giving up. Started in second moved to occasionally popping 3rd, then had it fixed.

FWIW getrag's site is showing the sunfires, cavys, speedster, etc as having the 287 which is the same as the alero. Yes there is some adjustment (its been several yrs) but It will affect more than one gear. Syncros problem would be engaging gears.

Try this... park the car. and leave it in second gear. with the helps of some friends try to push the car (with the ebrake off) and see if the tranny pops out of gear. If it does then the problem is that its not fully engaged and probably an adjustment issue. Otherwise it may very well be the begining of a clutch going bad.

I don't get how a worn clutch could cause it to pop out of gear, wanna explain?

ya...worn clutch will slip...not pop outta gear...its probly just an adjustment thing...guy's cavy did that, and ended up he stripped that gear completely, so it had nothing to grab onto..so it popped...

the way its was explained to me, years ago by some guy at a tranny place, so it may be right may be wrong...dunno. was based on the problems I was having, the 2nd and either first and/or third, cant remember, gears popping when I got on the gas and fine when cruising.

Bassically the cluth was worn and lacked the material to take the power when romping on the gas, it was fine while just cruising though. Some of the gears would not pop (but probably was damaging the syncros I was told) b/c of the speed of the tranny and the relative ease with which the gears turned. it made sense at the time b/c the problem got worse and worse allowing less and less accel before popping. It also went away with new clutch. I'm probably forgetting something but this is just what was explained to me when I was like 17. I can't vouch for its accuracy.

I would say if it is a linkage adjustment it would have some other effects somewhere, not neccasarily negative, since the linkages affect all of the gears, most noticably opposite the one having the problem, 1st or rev.

Either way I'm gonna end up poor. I bought this car to save me money in the long run. So far i think i was better off with my corsica.
I can't take the transmission out myself. And my dad, who has built many vehicles himself, won't help me. So I'm f*cked. Unless I can scrape up $1200 before my car totally falls apart.
And between school, insurance, car payment, crappy job, and old loan payments, I find that very unlikely. Mostly because I very much doubt that just putting a new clutch in my car (witch will still cost me alot of money unless someone has any other ideas) will help anything.
Sorry if i am sounding like a pesimist but this is really pissing me off.

I just re-re-read your original post. since you are having problems with second and Rev. It probably is a linkage adjustment issue. The problem as I see it would be on the linkage that affects the back three gears 2,4,R, and the collar engaging those gears. Can't remember at the moment which cable it is but it will be the one that moves when you move the shifter from from to back. Play with the linkage for a good long time, making very small adjustments and I bet you will get it worked out. I think I worked with mine for near a week, on and off, before I was comfortable with it.

If you still need help let us know where you are located, I bet some member here or on JBO would be willing to help you out. Hang in there I'm sure things will work out.

I have tried to make adjustments, but every time I do, I make kinda big adjustments. I'll try making finer adjustments and see if it works. Thank you for oyu help.
