View Full Version : Weakest Link

what seems to be the biggest weak link in the 60* V6. Is it the actual layout of the engine (60* V)? I know of engines that have half the displacement that are capable of over 3 or 4 times the hp.
Say we put in a billet crank, forged rods/pistons, dual springs, hot cam, worked over heads.....are we still going to be limited to 7k RPMs and around 400 hp?
The temptation is growing to transplant an Eldo tranny and LS1, knowing the limitations.
I happen to have a GMC Safari van with 4.3 vortec, 700r4, and remaining drivetrain that I'm more tempted to build up at this point, and have actually considered a frankenstein on that number too.

in my opinion, the only limitations, are the the amount of funds you are willing to spend?

so very very true, when John's car is done it will be a fine example of what a very well done up 3400 can do...........

what's John's projected or estimated HP #'s supposed to look like....and is it a daily driver or his track car?

Funds are your biggest hurdle. Of course what engines are you thinking of? I can think of several smaller engines with way more power of course they lack the pushrods....

if i was gonna do a engine swap i'd go for the 3.9 series 3 supercharged v6 with the 6 speed manual.

um, the series 3 S/C motor is a 3.8, not a 3.9.
the 3.9 is not s/c'd and puts down the same #'s as the 3.8 S/C. and its not even available yet.

^^ maybe he was saying he would eventually do the 3.9 and add a supercharger to it?, thats always a possibility, and think of the power that thing could push with a s/c on it, that would be one engine to be proud of

ummm the 3.8 supercharged, is a series II not III, the III is coming out later, and thats why i said i would do that if i could. and i could of sworn the 3.9 series III was supercharged and was gonna be in the G6 in the future.
thats a big ol negitive about the series III s/c engine -Alero-.
explanation.......
the series III s/c engine is in the 2004 Grand Prix GTP's already. as of 2005 they are no longer being made. and the only difference between the series II and the series III is the different (newer model) supercharger sitting on top of the engine.
the 3.9 is NOT going to be supercharged. the 3.9 will go into the 2005/2006 G6 GTP. now for "why" the 3.9 can not be in any way a series III. well, honestly, there isnt a series I or II 3.9 (aka 3900)

the weakest link is by far the pistons. after that who knows. not many have tried to push this thing REALLY hard.
i've herd of few turbo's running 400+ on a stock crank.

my hp goals are extremely high. I"ll have to work up to the full potential. also considering its never been pushed to this level before everything is experemental.
I'm over building much of the engine but who knows what will/could break. at this point my only concern is lack of really high quality head gaskets and the block its self. since mine is a stroker I wont be seeking the high revs but it should withstand 8000 with no trouble i just dont plan on pushing it that high

3100 - 3400 - 3500- 3900 all 60* v6's
3800 is a 90* v6 and is in no way shape or from related to the above.
