What is the amp rating on the factory alternator?
i think mine is about ready to replace but don't need a 140 or 160 amp. Somewhere once i read factory was 65amp or 80amp.

now here is a question for ya..............
at what rpm does the alternator put out full voltage???????
from what i can on my car is at around 650-700 rpm is when the amp is putting out full voltage. But car idles at 525 rpm. So you can see how having a lot of draw at idle can wear down the alternator.
You know most of those tests they do to check out an alternator is at a certain rpm. so your alternator could be good at higher rpm but not very strong at idle.

Hey I gotta question in reference with alternators. My lights are like flickering, even my dome light in the car with it at idle. I have replaced the battery already from the ac delco one to a napa gold. Everytime i test it, it's throwing out juice, and from the people i have talked to, it it putting out what it is supposed to...ideas?
there is nothing like mega draw, i dont have a system or anything...

it may possibly be ur belt too if the belt doesn't have the right tension on it that is one of the affects.

I just had the same problem I had the Napa gold battery and the lights would flicker plus it wouldn't start in this freezing cold I changed the alternator and battery and works fine now. The alternator is a Duralast Gold 105 amp I got from autozone(if this helps ya any)

Yea like this morning, I went out to start it, and it just barely turned over. Obviously the colder it is, the more draw on the battery...I haven't yet had the problem with it not starting, but it is inevitable. I have an extended warranty on the car, should I wait until it HAS to be replaced, prolly then it will cover it...or maybe change it like now? How much did that alternator run ya? Thanks for the help guys.

$150 plus a core charge that came out to like $215. That was the only one in stock they have cheaper ones too.

Well i am convinced that it needs a new alternator, I'm just not too crazy on shelling out 200 bucks plus labor to do it. I'm not a mechanic by far, but I do wonder if the extended warranty will cover that...hmmm..thanks dude much obliged.

Went to the local garage, well one of them, and they told me that it was the battery...Well I put a new one in (under warranty) so we'll see how it goes...thanks

i don't know much about car engines but i can tell you that i have changed 4-4 alternators on various cars it's not that hard little commen ense ratchet set maybe a crow bar and boom it's out, not sure bout the ALero yet but most cars nower days have tensioners to loosen and tighten the belts. And yes usually when u change ur Alternator your battery will need it two depending on how old ur battery is, plus check the connection from the battery terminal.
