Ok... Here we go again... Good ol' GM for ya.... My Service Engine Soon (SES) light came on today.... The car runs exactly like it does anyother day... No shifting problems... No loss of power....Oil was changed less than a week ago... Coolant has been filled... So someone please tell me WTF!!! BTW i have a couple questions to ask...

My father and i got into a discussion about my car today... We got on the topic of reliability and engines and trannys... My car currently has 104,000 Miles on it. So heres the question, If i were to go to a salvage yard and find another 3400 Motor and tranny how much would i expect to pay for it? And another question What other engines and trannys will fit into the alero without modification of hardly anything besides electronics? Reason im asking is that we may have this car for alot longer than expected. This actually might end up being my mothers car so we want a few more years out if. so any info please help....

Might have a loose connection or the computer needs to be reset. I dunno a lot about cars but that's just want my guess would be. You could take it to an Advance auto or some place like that, and have them hook it up to the machine to see if they find anything.

Could be as simple as a bad O2 sensor.

Have a shop run a scanner on it

I know it sounds stupid but gas cap might not be tight (happened to me once and light came on). Before you bring it in just disconnect the battery for a few seconds and then reconnect and if it comes on again then you have more of a problem.

Many auto parts stores will scan your codes for free. Do that, then come back and we'll help ya with the fix.

As far as a new engine, try car-part.com to get an idea of pricing. I've seen 3400's with less than 30,000 miles for under $600.00. Biggest problem would be shipping if you can't find one near you.

EDIT: www.car-part.com returned 81 pages of 3400's. And that was just searching for 2001's!

How much for tranny's????

Your going to find just as many tranny's as engines. And they will probably be around the same price. If you look hard, you may be able to find an engine-tranny deal, where everything comes out of one car and is shipped to you. That would probably be your best bet.

so your car runs fine, but the SES light is on, but your going to replace the ENGINE AND TRANNY and spend 1500 on just parts? jeez. go to checkers, have them scan it, it will probalby cost you 50 to fix.

when my egr valve went, i didn't have any driveability issues, just a light and it cost me 45 shipped to fix

No the reason why i am getting a new motor and tranny is simply because i do not trust GM... My car has over 100K miles and its only a 2000... God only knows what previous owners did to this car. I need it to last until i can afford to buy a newer car(which wont be for a while).
