ok i have about three friends in town who all have alero's and all of them claim that their cars have no speed limiters and that they can all ecceed the i think 108 speed mark, one is a 99gls with the 3400, the other is a 03gx with the 2.2 and the other is a 99 something with the 2.4 , none of them have any engine mods or exterior mods and none of them plan to anyway, but they all still claim that they dont have a speed limiter, are they just on crack cause im pretty sure they were all made with one and im pretty sure they most likely didnt buy all three used with a new pcm in it that has no limiter, so what you guys think? <_<

I'd call bs. all non modded US cars have the limiter. Ive got a 2002 3400 gls and hit the govener a few times.

I love hitting the governor, makes me wonder what my black beauty can do, then I realize it is an Olds and it can't do anything and I slow down. All I think when I am going 100+ is that if Olds can't make the damn window from breaking its clips, how can I trust them going this fast?

Ive made 200km trips going average speed of 160-180 kmph without any problems. Some wind noise but its a smooth ride, i have faith in my Olds. B)

there was a rare few in 99 that had the european computers in the cars. they will top out at around 120-130. somewhere around there. but the chances of 2 of them in your part of the world is very slim.
I would be very skeptical unless you are with them when they go over the 110 mark and keep going.
far the 03..............BS

The 99, yes I believe it. I rented one in Vegas and had that bad boy up to 122 MPH and it had the 2.4.
The rest, BS they have one

mine kicks in at 106-107, def not 110 on mine

mine hits 108 and then it is like hitting the cruise. rather than hit 110 and then cut out.

I hit 120 mph in my '99 before I had to hit the brakes... That was the one and only time I got her over 100.

I have a '01 and if the RPM's are high it will top out at 108, but if I maintain a good level RPM (as in going downhill), I can hit 120. Tries to shut off at 121.

Hell, i got paced by a damn KIA Accent the other day and couldn't ditch it cuz i kept topping out. <_<
'Our cars topping out at 108 and taking that "hit" to slow down, IMO, is the equivalent of someone socking you in the stomach and saying "This is an Oldsmobile. What the f%&* were you thinking?'
all OBD2 equiped cars have a speed limiter programed in to it. it has to. thats part of the governments requirements in the US.
HOWEVER, some makes, models, years, etc. will have different speed limiters.
9/10 times the speed limiter will be right around where the speed rate of the tires are on the car when it leave the factory.
if the car came with a sport tire, they tend to have higher speed limits than cars that came with less sporty tires.
they do this so that when you do decide to take it to the limit, you do not go past the rated speed of your tires and possibly blow a tire out.
i dont know anything about the alero's limiter.
but even if one were to have a DHP or other aftermarket PCM that is ran on OBD2 cars, it still has a speed limiter, its just so high that you will never reach it.
for example, DHP's usual speed limiter is like 200mph

You will notice this in the Cadillac STS's 98-2004. The SLS was limited lower than the STS. All because of sport suspension and higher rated tires......damn government!

mine limits the RPM's when i hit about 107.5mph, it sucks but i spose yur burnin up that much gas so it kinda socks you back into reality, and makes you realize maybe there's a cop over that next hill

and then if the cop don't drop the speed down, then you get slapped with attempted suicide or if someone's w/ ya, then its attempted vehicular man slaughter, i dunno forsure, but its pretty f***ed up when its that fast

the law of physics.
wind drag/resistance will NEVER allow your car or my car to ever reach over 200 mph
my speed limiter kicks in at 120... not that i would know from experience or anything :glare:
