My 2001 Alero 2.4 engine needs a new catalytic converter. I haven't found anyone who makes an aftermarket one. GM wants $536.63 for a replacement. GMPartsDirect.com charges $375.64 plus $40.00 for the core but they want $70.00 for S&H. Has anyone found a reasonably priced cat for the 2.4 engine? I don't want used.

Try this on for size: Magnaflow High flow Cats, Performance Peddler.com (http://www.performancepeddler.com/CatLists.asp?displayStyle=1&chkHideImages=0&CatKey=Converter&CatName=Magnaflow)

This page gives you links to different series of Magnaflow cats. Look for a cat that matches your current exhaust pipe diameter, the length of your current cat, and choose either stainless or aluminised steel. These cats will need to be installed by an exhaust shop because they come without flanges, but even after paying for the installation, it'll be way cheaper. ( Not to mention you may see an increase in gas mileage due to the reduced restriction in your exhaust system.

Hope this helps ya man.

BTW, welcome to the boards. B)

How many miles do you have? if you have less than 80,000 they have to replace it for free.

this is why i was happy i purchased the extended warranty for like $1600 when i got the car, its covered minus $100 deductible on any work and suprise suprise, catalytic converter went out about 3 months after purchasing the car. like they said above, aftermarket is way cheaper and more beneficial

Called dealer, the converter "may" be covered under warranty. Made an appointment to bring it in for January 18th. If it is covered, there is no charge, if it isn't there will be a service charge of $90.00. I'll let you know what happens.

Hope your covered man. My "cat" was shot at 28,000km. The dealership where I bought the car charged me $482.00 to change 6 spark plugs and to run a few tests. They wanted another $1147.00 for a new cat. You could imagine my surprise. The car is covered BtoB for 80,000km. They told me the after market alarm system was to blame. HAHA. The second place I took the car to did all the repairs. All covered. Took awhile to get my green backs from the 1st place but it all worked out in the end.

Just get a universal aftermarket one, they pretty well all flow the same. Don't believe the hype about "high-flow" cats. Its been shown that OEM and the High-flow have approx the same cfm rate.

My appointment at the dealer is Jan 18, who knows, maybe the converter is ok & it's something else. The car is running fine. The service engine soon light came on, I changed both oxygen sensors then took it to my local mechanic, he ran it for codes and said the new oxygen sensors may cure the problem and reset the light but if the light came back on it was the cat. I drove 5 miles & the light was back on.

for 40 bucks you might just want to pick up that cat.... before someone else does.

quick question... what's a trans am gt? i had a GTA, but i never really heard of anyone referring to the "normal" trans am as a GT.

In 1994, the Trans Am GT was an option group. I purchased the car new in September 1993, I still have the original Pontiac dealer catalog. The GT option included the following as standard equipment that the regular Trans Am did not: rear floor mats, bodyside moldings, 4 way manual seat adjuster, remote keyless entry with illuminated entry & cassette with graphic equalizer and steering wheel controls. However the only place you actually saw "GT" was on the bill of sale. The option was only offerd for a couple of years. But on alot of computer auto parts search sites, once I type in 1994 Trans AM, they do ask if it's a "Trans Am GT" . The only options I had to pay extra for were leather seating & automatic transmission.

Great news, 1st I want to thank Daniel for making me aware that the warranty was still good on the cat. I just got back from the dealer, they confirmed the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. They ordered a new one, that should be in next week. So there was no charge today and there won't be any charge for replacement next week.
