taking off the car is going to make it non street legal......what most people do is get the cat cut out and weld ends onto the side and ask a muffler shop to weld up a test pipe that goes in place of the cat........so when it comes time to get it smogged no problems and yes if you remove the cat you are going to have o2 sensor problems so u r going to need that device that fakes the signal, cant think of the name.......

The slp is a very good sound espically if your a mustang guy and you like the sound of a v-8. It is a little louder than borla. I dont have any times thus far but now I have a grand am gt with all the mods swapped into and hopefully come spring I will have heads that have been ported, polsished and milled and a cam to help them out.

i did a little searching around and here's what i found for ya bro, a couple sound clips.
slp (http://exhaustsoundclips.com/phpbb2/dload.php?action=file&file_id=179)
borla (http://exhaustsoundclips.com/phpbb2/dload.php?action=file&file_id=178)
saber (http://exhaustsoundclips.com/phpbb2/dload.php?action=file&file_id=167)
that last one, saber says it for a 99 grand am. if thats the case, it should work for you as well. i have no clue where you could buy it though.

I just put a Flowmaster 80 on mine with dual tips, Sounds good.
I had one of those chormed out rice mufflers on it and it sounded OK but after I do the heads, headers, cat, and slp pipes, it would have sucked

well sorry it took me so long to find this, but I have a magnaflow on my car..it sounds great. its not loud, but you're still able to hear it...it does not sound importish at all. The part that I really like is that you don't get that annoying, put you to sleep, make you crank up the radio drone while you're just driving down the street.

doing a dual exhaust setup? or twin tip like stock? id go magnaflow too, for a dual exhaust setup, get the "camaro" muffler. has a inlet and outlet on 1 side, outlet on the other side. magnaflow's supposed to be louder than borla, not as loud as SLP, and flows alot better than flowmaster.
you can get a 2.5" mandrel bent SLP pipe that goes from the cat all the way to the muffler for $180shipped, (contact slp, they will sell the pipe seperate from the muffler/tips) or have a shop do up some crush bent 2.5"

Actually it isn't legal here. Granted you are not in an area that does smog testing, Harris County does by the way, the inspection shop is supposed to do a visual inspection of the exhaust system to ensure everything is there if they don't smog check it.
Alero cats are pretty good at flowing, but since your increasing the diameter of the pipes I would go with a hi-flow cat from catco or dynomax (both under $100) with the same diameter of the new pipes in the original cats place. If you do end up removing the cat all together you will need an O2 sensor adaptor to plug in or you'll be staring at a SES light on your dash all the time. You could remove the resonator behind the cat with no problems though.

damn i used to be an inspector and they never told us anything about checking exhaust...basically we had to check for exhaust leaks but never for any cats....im down here in the valley bro...maybe its different

even if they dont check for a cat, if you get caught without one its a HUGE fine, i thought i heard like $25000. your car will smell too, thats a little hint for the cop if he pulls you over for somthing else, or even if he's driving behind you

I live Deep in south texas also, and its NOT legal to not have a catconverter, i run a custom flowmaster system with cat and mine sounds excellent close to v8 tone, if you use the search on the cat subject you will find alot of interesting performance info.
and correct me if i'm wrong but i thought the EPA has caused everywhere in the us to have emmision standards? its just that not all counties do the testing YET?

well if they passed that law than this county has some serious offenders...i see tons of people with smoking vehicles....i just got the stang passed here and they looked and saw my off road Hpipe...so i assume cats were NOT needed here...i know muffler shops will touch the car with no cats versus countys with emissions they wont even look at a car with no cats

muffler shops here wont take one off, and they wont redo exhaust unless they put one back on? unless you know people and luckily i do. yeah, the valley may be a little different, you can get away with alot more down there, but the performance gains with and without a cat on an alero is gonna be minimal, and if the alero is going to houston? they are strict there! my friends 82 mustang has to be trailered down here to get a sticker, he's running 375 horse with his 5 liter. do you make it up to Corpus?
Xx91stangxX
12-04-2004, 05:14 PM
nah i havent yet...we might be transferring over to kingsville tho in the next year or so....so might be hittin corpus alot more then...i have wanted to stop in and visit around corpus tho on my way to Houston when i go visit...and yeah Houston is strict on emissions thats why i changed my address to here so now i can register it here with no emissions....i got around 330 at the wheels on motor and around 450 on spray..what set up does ur boy have
