If I dont change the computer on my Alero, is a cooler thermostat worth it?

Yeah, I did it and have no desire to do a PCM

I run about half way between 1/4 and 1/2

real tuff...ahhhh WHAT....I did it within an hour and a half by myself with a Haynes Manual and that was my first time working on my engine other than a cold air intake. Not too bad for what you get. Okay...I got one scar right on my thumb so be easy with the Throttle Body bolts.

How's it run in the winter? Does it run too cold? Or is it just about right?

** Now's prime-time for me to swap-in a 180 with all the gasket business going on.

Its very easy! Drain the coolant by the drain cock or the lower radiator hose. Remove air intake tube, probaly whole intake box for better access. (my friends alero had a cai on it when I did his.) Remove the two bolts on the t-stat housing, kind of a bitch to get off but just do a lot of little turns with a wrench and it should come eventionally. Pull housing off, might have to twist it around a bit to get it out. I think you also need to disconnect the hose from the housing. Look how the thermostat is in there and make sure to put the new one in the exact same way. If there is a gasket on the thermostat make sure it is in good shape. (Can't remeber its been a while) You can take the gasket off the old one if needed.

Then just do everything in the opposite order. Reconnect all hoses and fill the radiator (overflow tank) with straight coolant. Warm the car up to operating temp and then open the bleed valve(s). Leave them open until coolant comes out and then tighten them back down. Recheck coolant level.

BTW: My GTP takes 5 minutes to change the t-stat! :D

Had mine in before last winter and it was a bad one, very cold and lots of snow.

No problems
