Ram Air Project

ok i thought i would share with you guys a ram air project im in the process of doing, first off i dont have any pictures of it yet but i will get some later and then i will post them to keep you updated, first you need two oval shappened cones or something to go on the body of the car to catch the air, i am using two oval shaped exhaust tips, it may sound crazy but it works, second you need an air duct hose preferebly 3 inch, you run a how preferebly 2 inch from each exhaust tip to the 3 inch air duct hose, then you need an open end air filter, these are easy to come by, they are the cone shaped filter with basically the sides open and then the fron tip open too, you get an addapter to connect the air duct hose to the front of the filter, and then you basically install the filter like a warm air but more it a little closer to the front of the car, when the air is pushed into the front end of the filter it creates a vaccume that will draw more air in from the sides of the filter which in return will give you more power.... here is a crudely drawn picture, but i feel that it shows the point good enough :thumbsup:

I have thought of that idea before since i have no fog lights just cutting that part out and sticking a 3 or 4' tube there to my wia for some kinda ram air with holes along the bottom befor the tube curves to let out any water that my collects in there. And just sealing off with the plastic i cut off in wintertime.

eh ram air really doesn't do that much.......sounds like a waste of time to me.....

you would be surprised, it mainly acts as a warm air intake from the start, like when getting off the line, but when you are racing or something the ram air will kick in and give you a little more kick and hp when you hit the high speeds and the upper part of the rpm band

basically what i was trying to say is that its just a tweaked out warm air intake, works like a normal intake but when you are racing it just gives a little more boost

those seat of the pants HP you are talking about is probably just what you hoped you would get out of it but in reality you probably don't get hardly anything out of this "ram-air setup" plus if your CAI ends in your fenderwell you would get just as much airflow by taking out the foglight.....whatever though.....it's your car.....

im doing it basically just to do it, i have alot of free time and i love to make things, so i just figured it would be kool to do for the heck of it anyway

I've been thinking about doing something similar to that for a while. I found some old 442 "ram-air-ish" scoops that are the exact shape as the cutouts where the foglights are. If I get off my ass and do it, I'll take pictures.

I read somewhere that them GA ramair setups are horrible, and are just another hype to help sell the car....who knows if it's true, but..... ;)

they claim that it adds 5 more hp and torque in the higher rpm band <_<

that 5hp is a combo of the intake AND the free'er flowing exhaust the GAGT has...not JUST the intake....plus the GAGT ram air setup gets it's rammed air from the front grill...where the hell would that draw air from in the Alero front bumper? there's no grill cutouts up top like the GA has.

Well I hope it works, cuz I've been in the process of putting on a ram air setup with my alero for almost a year, lol., except i'll be using hood scoops and air conditioning ducts that i got from the junkyard to force the incoming air into my K&N intake filter. Hope it works ^_^

couldnt you run the filter right into the front on the bumper say arround the middle cut out than run a tube up into the engine capartment, for an example like a inter cooler does. If so with the cut outs on both side you could run two filters connect them buy two tubes into one and run it to the engine, is that a possibility.

the only problem is that you really need to keep the filter away from the open a little, you need to get it close to the front but oo much means water in the filter, you need you make the intake tube from the inlets curve down with holes at the bottom of the curve, and then back up into the filter so the water will collect and then drip out the bottom

I was looking one a site a few weeks ago and saw a aniversal intake that mimcs a inter cooler, i belive its arround 249.00 and you can get it from summit if im not mistaking.

Well I didnt intentionally do this for a ram air setup, but when I did a custom intake on my Ecotec alero, I ended up with a similiar end result. Basically a buddy of mine and I relocated the Battery tray towards the fuse box, so that a relatively straight pipe could come off the 90 degree turn on the TB, and then go straight to the hole that was originally used for the stock intake piping. I enlarged that hole slightly with a chisle and rubber mallet to open up the metal edges (not tampering with the support beams) and then used the stock Rubber intake hose and routed that off the Pipe into the hole and then forward towards the back of the bumper. If you remove the lil wall that would be found behind the DS foglight provides subsequent room for a cone filter of a decent size. In my case, I just put my cone filter in there, and the airdam allows air into that area. The Stock rubber intake hosing was flipped around so that the IAT Sensor housing/inlet was right by the filter. I then spliced in two relatively similiar guaged wires into the sensor, and extended them down to the housing, so that the sensor got the coldest temperatures readings. Ive been quite happy with this mod so far, and have had no problems with Hydrolock as of yet (knock on wood). I'll try and get you some pics.

you wouldn't want to put the filter on the end of the pipe by the ram air part, because you'd have a incredibly long intake tube, which would rob alot of torque. the fact that the intake is setup like a WAI (better for torque) with a kind of CAI add on, it sounds like you'd get the best of both worlds.

thats kinda what i was thinking, the filter wont be too far from the intake like a warm air but you would still be getting colder air to the filter, so you would have both of the two, kinda like an inbetween setup

I'm in the process of making a functional dual hood scoops. I'll let you know if there's any HP gain when it's all done.
