is it possible to swap my auto tranny for a 5 speed? I think the ones out of the cavaliers will work?

a 3400 5 speed would be niiiiiiiice.

I dont think it can be done. GM doesnt even make a 5 speed for the 3400 not to mention all the extensive modding need to the wiring.

i'm almost positive a 5 speed out of a 2000 and up cavalier would work

or what about the ones out of the older cavaliers that came with the 3100, one of those would surely work. Then get the computer reprogrammed.

the 3100 never had a manual trans

thanks for the link, keep us posted on how your swap is going.

I wont be doing mine for a while cuz i clued in that if I did it now my warranty would be all shot to hell (2004 model year) so i'll have to wait about a year till im over the miles. hopefully by then a few people will have done it.

I am positive that the 2000+ cavalier 5 speed will handle the power of the 3400 though, because a guy swaped a 3.8 SC with NOS into a cavalier with the 5 speed and had no problems at all.

if i had a chance to do it all over again id go with the ECOTEC w/5spd, and then boosted it....but i didnt find this board till after i got my alero.. <_< ..anyways, overdrive75 will tell you that you will have alot of problems with the computer so it really isnt worth it to try the swap, unless you have alot of money to play with...im sure springsfastestalero will have some nightmares with going into his swap, being the first to do it, but he does have some finances to work with.

Yeah, that is exactly why I went with my car. I didn't even realize the potential of this motor when I first bought it, but really lucked out.

what's so great about the ecotec? you cant do anything with it that you cant do with any other engine.

its not costing me as much as you would think
the killer part is making it handle my projected power.
mastercard is covering this project ;)

but you must keep in mind I've been seriously digging into the project for over a year now.
I have time since my motor is still in the machine shop and waiting on parts.
also being the motor is not in the car makes it easier to work with things in getting all the components for the manual installed

Gees springs you still havnt decided on the transmission you want? Get crackin' :P

Have you found out any more info on said 6-speed transaxle yet? The G6 GTP has an optional 6-speed I know that, but is it the same Getrag that's been used in the Saab 9-3 Aero's?

I have the trans here
94 cavalier Z24
thoughts I'm toying with are: close ratio gears, 3.94 final drive ratio, sixth gear kit, limited slip differential.

the limited slip is pretty much a must with my setup
I also want the close ratio gears.
my co-worker says he has info on a place that sells a sixth gear kit for the getreg 282.
5th is on its own shaft and there is room for another gear.
guess its been done
I'm still trying to find more info.
the manual project is actually what I currently have the most parts for
I'm waiting on many things for the engine and also many things for the supercharger

well with the ECO you can boost it up to 400 horse before rod issues MIGHT come up, stock fuel system is good enuff for 260 whp, then it gives up....some have said with swapping the rods(i believe in the j-body feature in HCI magazine), and fuel an new intake system ....on boost will net around 550 to 600....i dont think ive seen a 3400 do that, theres not the aftermarket like the ECOTEC has

With stock internals and nothing more then boost, the eco will run up to 283hp before it gives up the ghost.....A few internal mods and they had it running at 350HP without problems.....if I had a lot of cash i would do this......but being the broke man I am :(

And S/C....I can't wait to see what kind of times you can get with a 6-speed tranny

i'd still rather have the 3400 then the ecotec.

yeah the 3400 has potential as well as the ecotec, the only problem is, the 3400's parts cost more thats all.

Then go buy a blank cam for the 3400 and have it ground to your specifications. Hmm whats that you say?... ;)

if I wanted an engine to get 500hp out of it... i wouldnt buy an ecotec or a 3400.
