View Full Version : Gas Mileage Again

okay so after adding the intake and exhaust ive noticed if anything a decrease in gas mileage.
i can get about 40 45 miles per quater tank tops, and thats with me driving like my graps.
now my question is i left the resonator on when i had the exhaust done. do you think if i remove this it will be better
now if i drive a little heavy i can be out of gas at 100-125 miles....
im getting sick of the poopty gas mileage.

any idears?

i've had the same problem, but i never paid attention to my gas mileage before i got the intake/exhaust.

i'm only getting 14mpg(170 on the tank) right now with WAI and exhaust

oh, and last week i sprayed a poopload of carb cleaner in the intake/tb and let all the crud run out. gained 10 miles per tank from that.

never hurts to put in fuel injection cleaner in every tank :D

FormulaNERD

yea, i do that too. but that never helped like this.

damn, i don't know what is wrong with your guys cars, i drive my car hard in city/highway traffic everyday in denver/boulder, at the very lowest i have gotten 23mpg, usually it is around 26/27 mpg.....

dirty intake valves? or burned exhaust valves maybe?

mobs241
10-18-2004, 12:19 AM
well i just redid the intake gaskets. and i run seafoam in it every once in a while to clean the injectors and valves. i dont know what else it could be.
but when i deliver pizzas on the side. it kinda concers me

I seriously think if you took that resonator off, it would improve.

FormulaNERD

no res here.. same problem

i think it's a sensor or the egr, but it's not throwin a code.

fuel filter? weak compression? lol i dunno

Crolero
10-18-2004, 03:52 AM
^^ fuel filter is always my problem. once i see that im not getting past 180 miles on a tank i replace my filter and walla, 250 miles on a tank.

oh geniuses...here's one for you..I've got the same deal going on with the poopy gas mileage, but my car has only got 5000 miles on it. Shouldn't thisbe the time when I'm getting the best mileage possible? It seemed like as soon as I put the CAI in, my mileage dropped 8-10 mpg.

You guys the put the CAI's on, did you leave the screen for the MAP sensor in place. If you did not, you screwed up the airflow curve calibration for that sensor. In turn, the sensor indicated a significantly higher airflow than the ending is actually seeing. This said, the computer richens the airfuel ratio to compensate. In most cases a rich code is set. But not all.

I know some of you guys are thinking, taking that screen out will help, when in reality there is minimal if any restriction in flow. The whole purpose of the screen is to create an even airflow in the intake near the sensor. With out the screan you get a velocity flow, with air at the sides moving slower than that of the air in the middle. Hence the sensor being in the middle sees more air move past it, simple fluid dynamics.
So there's your food for thought, if you removed that screen try putting it back in and see if that helps you.

Im not sure why you guys are getting such bad gas milelage. I still get close to 20 in the cities and probably close to 30 if it was all highway. Your af curve must be way off. Some sensor is feeding the pcm some bogus info.

Since I got my '04 i've averaged 29mpg i do about 90% of my driving on the highway, best i've gotten is 32 worst is 23 (damn construction)

anyways, sounds simple but what about pCV valve? spark plugs?

check the plugs, they don't usually last that long

yea ive done the same things these guys have done....new plugs, wires, pcv valve, the fuel filter helps but its still crap.......i wanna change the o2 sensor but its not settin a code so i dunno.......intake and flowmaster here.......so i dunno

tenny
10-19-2004, 12:48 PM
i'd change the plug,s or at least take them out and check them, if you leave them in there for 100k they will probably be seized right in there when u go to change them

but what kinda plugs
ngk
ac delco

im aslo ordering taylor 8mm wires for it.

For those of you with this gas milage issue. Please post up the mods that you have done to your car and if you have a CAI, post up what kind. (i.e. APOC, Naich speed, ID) May have a few suggestions to check out.

wai with flowmaster as well, 3" cat, real o2 sensor, not a sim.

its possible that a sensor can be jacked up but not set a code right??......it hasta be something like that.......i always must note that i have a semi fluctuating idle something like 750 and then it may drop to 700 then back up.....almost seems like its a cylinder.......makes me wonder if ignition, injectors, things like that are in working order........

FormulaNERD
10-19-2004, 11:43 PM
i had that idle problem with a bad MAF.

Check your exhaust tip adn tell me if it is black w/ soot.

yea, mine is, but i wouldnt say it's coated... you can still see rust underneath b/c my tips arent stainless.

Can you guys post up a pic of each of your intakes. What I'm looking for is the placement of your IAT sensor.

FormulaNERD
10-21-2004, 09:42 AM
my IAT is on the back (firewall) side of the first coupler about 3" from the TB and another 3 to the MAF, i can get a pic later if you dont understand what i'm saying.

i have the stock accordian tube still on my wai. so its the stock placement.

I've had my 2001 Alero (3.4L) for about 7 weeks now and I did a few calculations on my gas mileage---> overall about 42mpg. I've not done any mod's to the engine/exhaust, etc. I don't go easy on it either--(last car was a 2.0L Sunbird---this HAS POWER! and I love the pull of it).

I've had very high mpg on the highway.

You're probably thinking "calculated wrong"...I checked the numbers with 2 other sources and they were very close.

as for mods---yes, I expect it to go down but with winter peaking around the corner up here in NB (Canada), I will wait until Spring.

mobs241
10-21-2004, 10:59 PM
is that mpg or kpg?

-Alero-
10-21-2004, 11:09 PM
he lives in canada so he meant kpg

mobs241
10-22-2004, 12:28 AM
thats waht i was thinking...
convert that..

3.4 Euro Alero
10-22-2004, 08:50 AM
Canadian (Imperial) MPG and US MPG are totally different check out this site (http://www.royalbank.com/cgi-bin/carloan/gas.pl) and you will see the difference. 42 MPG in Canada is actually 35 MPG in the US. Type in 745 KM and 50 Litres.

Crolero
10-22-2004, 09:28 AM
so in canada you guys dont use the L/100km? (liters of gas wasted per 100km)

3.4 Euro Alero
10-22-2004, 10:34 AM
Canada does use L/100km, but that crap doesn't make sense to me. It's like saying I am 187.98 centimeters tall and weigh 102 kilograms instead of 6'2" 225 lbs. What the hell is that sh*t???

Crazytaxi37

Is there anyone on the site that is running a warn air intake and is getting normal mileage. Anyone, Anyone.

FormulaNERD
10-23-2004, 06:10 PM
ME. 190 on the last tank.

Crazytaxi37
10-23-2004, 06:37 PM
Ok, I get 340 a tank w/ the s/c so that's not normal.

mobs241
10-23-2004, 07:35 PM
lst tank was 150 and 10.5 gallons to fill up.

tenny
10-23-2004, 08:27 PM
i just filled up and got 31mpg almost all highway

what really ticks me off about my car though is i was right on the E, low fuel light was not even on yet, iand there was still about 4 gallons left in the tank.

i think my gauge is messed up or something, it was right on the red line, so that means i still had about 120 miles left before running out.

FormulaNERD
10-23-2004, 09:41 PM
i drove mine on the dummy light forever, and i sputtered into the gas station, luckily i made it..... 12.06 gallons to fill up.

i'm getting 15.88 mpg

mobs241
10-23-2004, 09:48 PM
ya im getting around 14- 15 mpg

3.4 Euro Alero
10-26-2004, 08:26 AM
And I thought I had problems with the 28 MPG on my new '04 as my '01 got aroung 31 on the highway. My worst EVER was last winter with the old one, using the remote starter every day and basically all city driving at 20 MPG.

WOW, don't feel nearly as bad now!
