Its almost that time to get to work on the car! Weather is warming up soon, and parts are coming in! Money is being spent!

As you know, i got new wheels, ordered a NEW transmission last week, and today.... I ordered MMS headers!! :)

But i still need parts. My next step is a new clutch. Once i have both a clutch and transmission on hand, i will unbolt my old trans from the motor to check my flywheel. Apparently its hard to find someone who will/can resurface a dual mass flywheel, so if it looks okay, feels okay, ill run it. If its noticable that it needs servicing, ill have to buy a new one. I found that a dual mass flywheel is basically unserviceable... But to be sure ill call GM dealer to see if they can do it...

Anyway i will stop in here for parts coming in, and progress.

Parts list

- clutch
- possible flywheel
- all fluids
- brake caliper paint
- headers (waiting for completion)
- spark plugs
- plug wires
- alternator
- possible battery
- misc bolts if i lost any
- fuel pump
- oil/filter
- maybe other things?

Im working hard as i can to get the car ready for the Olds show this year. Its coming up fast! And im trying my best to get the car back to running state.

Im getting excited, im getting really close to putting the engine back in. I miss driving my black car so much. Its sad to see her heart ripped out. :(

But anyway! Once i have the clutch/trans on hand, i can replace those parts and be able to drop the engine back in! But from there i will be waiting on headers to come in, i cant start the car let alone bleed fluids without them. So im counting on those to be ready asap! (They are made to order, wait on building them, and coating before they are ready for shipment)

I am shooting for early May to have the car RUNNING, but it SHOULD be done before that, other then the headers. If i can get it done early may and running that gives me 1.5 months to make sure everything is sound with the car before i travel to the Olds show.

Also the fuel pump will get replaced down the road, just because the car has a full tank of gas and im not dealing with that! Ill wait till i get down to E before i drop the tank.

But like i said, ill stop in frequently with updates. I get the transmission in tomorrow at my work (had it shipped there) and then ill haul it home with me after work. Im just getting excited. I cant wait to here her fire up for the first time in months! I almost forget how she sounds, let alone i miss driving the 6 speed, my auto 3400 i bought for a daily is getting boring! I need enthusiasm!

For a mind refresher, here is how she sits currently.

I played football in high school and then got an injury that ended my time playing football. Shattered part of my Achilles and tore every single tendon, ligament, and muscle clean off my right ankle. It sucked. Not as bad as my back injury though. Oh well such is life. Now I'm married with a baby girl and almost got my mechanic degree. Funny how life works. New clutch and pressure plate came today. :)

Shitty part was GM doesnt have a clutch alignment tool that comes with the set, any auto store you get a clutch from, gets you a clutch, pressure plate, and tool to align it.... So after work i went to 3 different auto stores, none of them could help me unless i bought a clutch. Lol so i had to find a 23 spline for GM vehicles on ebay, paid 7$ plus 5 extra for faster shipping because im trying to work on the car this weekend.

Good looking clutch. If you are junking your other F40 you could use the input shaft from it. They make great alignment tools.

sleepyalero
03-10-2015, 11:41 AM
No, i ordered a tool. 12$ ;)

The other f40 may be kept as a back up/rebuild so if anything happens again, i could have a transmission on hand to swap back in. But im not sure yet.

03Alerosil
03-10-2015, 04:25 PM
You could put all new synchro assemblies in it and bearings and have another good transmission.

sleepyalero
03-10-2015, 06:13 PM
Yeah just gotta find a place to do it.

Gm said they dont rebuild the f40, they just replace them with a new unit.

03Alerosil
03-10-2015, 06:20 PM
It's probably gonna have to be done by a specialty shop that only does transmissions. Or you could tackle it yourself. They are not overly hard

Well its official, no one around me can or knows anyone that can resurface a dual mass flywheel....
New from GM has a price tag of 587$ + tax.

Ill find out this weekend if i need a good resurface, if i do, ill have to just buy a new flywheel unfortunately.... Fingers crossed its not bad.

03Alerosil
03-11-2015, 07:02 PM
Can you just install a regular flywheel? All a dual mass does it soak up torsional vibrations so your shifts feel smoother

sleepyalero
03-11-2015, 08:29 PM
Idk i think you need to use the dual mass...

Today after work i pulled the old transmission off along with clutch and everything.

03Alerosil
03-11-2015, 09:40 PM
Flywheel is shot. You do not need to use a dual mass. It's a popular swap in F-350 to dispose of the dual mass and put in a solid one. All a dual mass does is fall apart and soak up some shifting action. I would look up a solid flywheel

sleepyalero
03-11-2015, 09:59 PM
Ill have to talk to milzy about that to be sure... Idk if i can do that or not.

03-11-2015, 10:05 PM
Let us know but I believe you can.

sleepyalero
03-11-2015, 10:08 PM
Im reading up on it now, some transmissions require a DMF, and coverting to a solid (single mass) flywheel, could result in added engine/trans damage because of the added vibration, since a DMF dampens vibration a bit more...

sleepyalero
03-12-2015, 12:25 PM

Hmmm... That's weird. I never had any issues with GMpartsdirect when I ordered parts from them. Granted they usually did take about a day or two to process and ship my order, but that's a reasonable amount of time to me. Especially when you consider that they do get a lot of orders and are shipping the parts from a GM dealer so they work normal dealer business hours. Once the parts did ship though, I usually received them in about 1-3 business days. Again that to me was a reasonable time frame. Now if they were taking like a week or longer to process and ship your order then I could definitely see why you would say they take forever to ship.

sleepyalero

Its been a week long search!

I finally found a new flywheel for my car! Thank god!

The flywheel is discontinued, and the company who made them went out of business, so its very hard to find. Found one down in florida at a GMC dealer, working with my chevy dealer near me to get it up here for me!

tw0123
03-16-2015, 07:32 PM
So with that company being it of business, what about the upgraded stuff? Is there much aftermarket for that transmission that will last long term, or is another company making the parts etc?

sleepyalero
03-16-2015, 09:30 PM
There is a company called LUK that offers a clutch/pressure plate. But no one offers a "aftermarket" flywheel for the car. So anyone planning on doing a 6 speed swap now is kind of screwed...

And anyone with a 6 speed swap now who needs a new flywheel will also be screwed, including me down the road. I will just have to find a company in the future to make me a flywheel for the car with an old one.

03Alerosil
03-16-2015, 09:32 PM

I'm ordering one from SPEC, they have a great lightweight one for mine. They have replaceable friction plates so you dont have keep replacing it, just new friction plates plates. I'm going to go ahead and get it from mine, they want to re-surface it no matter what so by the time its done might as well get new one. Dont know if they have it for yours but SPEC seems to be the go-to for us 4 banger guys.

Yes, but there is always a way around things!

I was thinking if you found a low mileage rear ended car the flywheel might be salvageable lol

Well yeah, but when taking apart a clutch/flywheel, and use a new clutch on a say, 30k mile flywheel, its ideal to get new. Or resurface the flywheel, but GM doesn't recommend doing that. They flywheels are basically one time use unfortunately,

And i doubt ill find a g6 low mileage, my flywheel had 38k on it before second gear synchronizer gave out. Its just not ideal to reuse a flywheel with a new clutch, you have to atleast clean the flywheel surface up before throwing it all together, if you dont and the surface isnt level, smooth and clean. You can end up having terrible clutch slippage, despite having a new clutch in there.

and rock auto! How do you get to the sway bar bushings? since you are in there, I'm replacing them when the car is in the air doing my suspension. I feel like I remember them up by the rack and pinion maybe?? I need to find my end links again to...

sleepyalero
03-20-2015, 08:49 AM
They are connected basically on the center of the lower control arm. 13mm nut on top, 13mm bolt head on bottom. (Atleast for stock end links) and of course, hold the ends of the sway bar to the LCA's. You cant miss em.

Ill probably upgrade to poly ones, by energy suspension.

rock auto is fine too, but some name brands that are super cheap i dont care to use, but SOMETIMES i can beat rock auto prices with my own discounts

Edit: oh sorry, sway bar bushings... Those are tough, basically go in near the down pipe tunnel, a 15mm shorty wrench is your beat friend for this. One on each side of the sway bar bolted to the sub frame. They are a pain with the motor in it.... Then there are "shoes" i want to call it, that snug around the bushing itself, one side has a bolt that goes on it (the 15mm you have to remove), other side has a tab that goes into a slot on the sub frame, super PITA to get it all back together...

Very!

So excited to get that part.... It's unbelievable.

Well, good news! Everything is here to put new trans on the motor, and i just got done installing my new rack and pinion, so car is ready for the motor and trans to go in tomorrow hopefully.

Of course i still need all fluids, and headers to start the car. So that will be a minute.

I had to half way remove the sway bar to install the rack, so now i need to add some things to my replacement list....

Getting movitech sway bar end links (they are light blue!) if no one knows by now, i love light blue lol. But movitech is also a pretty good brand i can live with, and they are 6$ each on rockauto. So cant beat it.

Rack needs outer tie rods, so going with MOOG outers.

Also noticed my lower control arm bushings look terrible, so going to replace both LCA's with MOOG replacements, comes with ball joints and bushings pre installed, also from rock auto. But yeah. I also got in a fight with my giant ratchet wrench tonight, busted nose, and both upper and lower lips busted. but ill survive!

We have a machine shop here that will machine dual mass fly wheels... we have used them after he machined them and never had any problems!

I recommend the energy suspension control arm bushings, that way you do not have to do them again! I have been running them in my grand am for the 3+ years / 40,000kms with no problems! And they where only like $40 for the kit at the time!

Nate if you and Scott can work out a deal it might be beneficial to ship him your old one to be machined here and ship it back.... then you have an extra... all depends on the cost of course....

Updated parts list/things needed to finish her!

- finish plugging in a few things.
- put axles in.
- oil
- oil filter
- new coolant tank
- paint calipers
- transmission fluid
- power steering fluid
- brake fluid
- bleed clutch
- lower control arms
- outer tie rods
- sway bar end links
- headers
- down pipe
- header gaskets
- may have to adjust shifter cables
- possible battery?
- possible alternator?
- plugs
- plug wires
- put new serpentine belt on

Reason behind the alternator is because i broke the back cover on it (plastic) and i dont know if it will hurt to not have it.

are you using the 4cyl N-body clutch master cylinder for the 6spd swap? If so you don't really have to bleed it, self venting cap or something I forget lol just need to pump the pedal a bunch of times and it comes to life :)

that sucks about the flywheel, I thought manufactures needed to keep parts available for 20yrs past the final build of a platform or some shit? Example N-body parts should be easily available in parts stores till at least 2025, gonna be a lot of pissed off F40 owners lol... glad I went 5spd!

tw0123
03-25-2015, 04:40 PM
I think it's only 10 yrs to keep parts in production, aftermarket will go 20 yrs if demand is still strong they'll go longer, but that's it... i know a couple years ago i got the last set of fuel lines from the gm warehouse for the n body....

sleepyalero

Aside from that, no HEC, its all g6 parts for the swap.

The rule is basically that the manufacturers have to have the parts available for 10 years. GM no longer makes any Oldsmobile parts since 2014 was 10 years of its death. At this point, a lot of the stuff now will become NOS parts scattered throughout the country, however not all manufacturers stick to this rule.

GM has had this happen before sadly. GM stopped producing seals for the 1991-1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible in 2000 from what I'm told. They screwed everyone with one of those over because now you have to get the pieces custom made or make them yourself using other brands' seals.

IDK how G6 owners are gonna deal with this when the time for a new flywheel comes, hopefully someone else can reverse engineer them.

Aftermarket is a different beast. Aftermarket can start or stop whenever it chooses to. I foresee N body parts being plentiful for another 5 years, after which, they will become scarce. The swappable parts like the brake pads, discs, struts, etc should be readily available for at least 30 to 40 years but bigger stuff like body and engine parts may become scarce.

I actually like the body style on the first generation IS. That being said though, I don't think I could ever own a Lexus. They're just overpriced Toyota's and in fact that generation IS was sold in Japan as the Toyota Altezza. That and anything Lexus has put out recently with the exception of the LFA is just ugly to look at it imo. Especially for the price tag that comes with it. If you like it though man that's all that really matters. So enjoy!

I don't like the way the front end on the new IS-F looks at all. The previous generation IS-F wasn't a bad looking car, but the current one is just plain ugly imo. They could've done much better with it. Like I said though the only model Lexus has come out with recently that I like is the LFA and if I'm ever able to afford a car in the $300k+ price range, I would probably go with something else. You're welcome man and haha I can't say I blame ya there lol. Although I feel it would only look good on certain colors. For example that wouldn't look very good on my Ruby Red Alero that I used to have lol. The radiators from my knowledge are a pain to make etc...

Last i talked to mike the front header and crossover were made, and the rear was being started. Then would go out for coating. And while that is being done, the downpipe will be fabbed.

I understand many peoples frustration on loss of communication with him, and delayed part times, but heres the thing. I look to Mike as a good friend. Im a loyal customer despite those things, because i know what he has to go through.

When me and mike do talk, half the time is 3 mind about parts, then the rest about my life and his life. Hes a good guy, trust me. I know its hard to see. But he has (i cant speak to much for him cause its not my business to tell) but hes been going through some tough life situations recently, which makes it harder for him, plus with he basically being the ONLY guy working at his shop (other then his fab guy) and with all the projects/work he has to do, its tough for him. Its hard to find good help nowadays the way i see it. The waiting sucks, i know. But i manage to deal with it. His fab guy helps him a little but he also runs his own business so he does fab work for mike on the side. We have talked about the radiators before when i went to his shop and i just remember its a pain for those parts to be made.

I hate seeing people upset with him, hes an awesome dude and has great parts. But i can understand your side, and Mikes side on things. Ill have to see what i can squeeze out of him on that radiator next time we speak.... Hes not out there to take your money and run, trust me. Sorry to hear your frustration!

I'm not that frustrated about him. And I can totally understand how life can change our plans sometimes... it's been like 5 years since the last time I drove my alero... I'm patiently waiting for these to be made.. anyway nobody else sells them...

But you know when you put something on special sale on your website normally you should have them in hand...
If not what's the point to make a sale...

Anyway back to your topic and if you can ask him about a build time estimate that would be awesome!

You keep talking and I might end up sending both my cars for custom exhaust work. If I get my Camaro running again, I want to do true duals with an X pipe. Only problem is that I have to do emissions so long story short, I've heard I can put a cat in the center of the X pipe. Something I really want to investigate.

Small update:

I found a guy parting out a lightly modded GA on fb, he has a 3 month old alternator on the car that he will part with for 40$ so im getting that in a couple days...

Also, my headers SHOULD go out for coating this week, the rear header is being fabbed up then its ready to send out. I wont be able to hit my may 1st start up goal, so im shooting for may 20th now, that will give me aabout a month to make sure the car is road worthy, and make sure all bolts are tight and everything is in working order. Im also going to be replacing the fuel pump shortly after its running too, but car has a full tank of gas so i will do that once its damn near empty.

But thats all i got for now, she still sits waiting patiently. :(

For sure! I plan on getting them coated this week. They are supposed to come coated. But i bit the bullet and picked them up before they went out. Mike doesnt like sending out headers with no coating, so dont expect to get a set uncoated lol. The coating he gets is great dont get me wrong. But the show is coming up soon and i have to get a move on and get some drive time in on the car before hand to make sure everything is in order. He sends headers out in bulk to get coated so it takes a little extra time rather then sending one set out.

Proud to say shes alive and well! Drove 60 miles today on the car, everything is fantastic. Ive missed driving the car so much, it feels really good to have her back up. :)

She started up first try, no issues. The MMS headers are still uncoated at the moment, i threw them on the car basically to make sure everything was correct and fitment was okay, headers are a perfect fit i must say, the fuel lines were in the way of the rear header/crossover so i had to move those a little, but no biggie! The headers definitely made the car louder, it sounds so much better with these then my old pacesetter headers. I love it.

I did throw two codes upon first start up, crank sensor and trans pressure solenoid, the solenoid doesnt refer to me with the 6 speed, and after i cleared it it has not come back, the other was a crank sensor (actually wasnt plugged in) aside from that everything is great. Im just happy, words cant describe lol

I still need to coat the headers, get rid of the fuel in the tank so i can install my new fuel pump, and im pretty sure my rotors are shot, may need to replace those, unless more braking helps.... They got so rusty from sitting (roof leaked water and tons of moisture in the air in my garage until i recently "fixed" my leak problem) so now every time i hit the brake you hear a "hhhssssssssss" coming from the brakes, so hopefully it goes away, if not, guess i need new rotors. But aside from that, shes pretty much good to go. The new transmission works great, car also needs an alignment pretty bad. I plan on driving it some more tomorrow, i managed to go from 3/4 tank to just above the half tank mark. I plan on getting the headers out this week for coating, and while thats going on ill replace the fuel pump. But thats my update! Heres some pictures! :)

No problem man and I believe it. It's always a great feeling to have your car back the way it should be. Glad to hear the test drives went well too. Other than the nut, bolt, or tool that you lost along the way lol, but as long as everything that is supposed to be there is still there you should be fine.

Yeah, it HAD to be something laying inside the bay, ive checked EVERYTHING and its all still in tact. So i cant say what it was. But when it did happen, i checked the most important bolts, then continued to have the car out and about for about 6 hours before i actually gave it a full look over.

I cant wait to have my headers back from coating. Im ready to drive it again! Its like im teasing myself, i drove her for 2 days, now cant drive her again until i get headers and fuel pump in. Lol

That01Olds
05-08-2015, 07:05 PM
Nice man. As far as the alignment goes that's a pretty easy fix. You could probably get that done while you're at work or on lunch if you wanted to. Of course that depends on if you're planning on doing it yourself or having it done by someone else.

sleepyalero
05-08-2015, 08:12 PM
I can do it at work, but dont care too, ill have my local GM dealer align the car for me, they have done all the alignments on my black car and im always satisfied so meh.

Also had them do the red car.

Reason i dont want to do it is because camber/caster is a real PITA to get in spec.

That01Olds
05-08-2015, 08:27 PM
Yeah this is true that it is. Plus it's just easier and quicker to have them do it honestly. Especially if they've done it before and you're satisfied with the work. That's why I suggested it would be a pretty easy fix if you had someone else do it as opposed to having to do it yourself lol.

sleepyalero
05-08-2015, 10:11 PM
Yeah, the dealer i always take her too loves my car, and treats it with much respect. I get it back clean, no finger prints or anything on it. And of course they show me before and after alignment specs. I don't trust side shops with my nice car. If i HAVE to take it somewhere its always my local dealer. They know how i feel about the car and just provide great service for me with the car. So they will always be first choice when i need something done.

I mean i do all my work myself at home, but alignements of course i cant do at home..

That01Olds
05-09-2015, 06:08 PM
That's great man. It's nice to have a car dealer that is like that with your car. Especially since it's getting harder and harder to find good car dealers these days. I know the Mazda dealer I bought my Volvo, Mazda3, and Miata from is like that and that's why I continue to buy from them and have my car serviced there. They even give you a free car wash every time you bring your car in for service and that isn't something you see a lot anymore. Plus they never try to sell me anything my car doesn't need like some of these other dealers try to do and the service department manager even knows me by name. That's what I call good service.

Very shiny! :coolio: Glad to see you got them back man. Yeah I feel ya on that one. My Alero had 183k miles when my dad mentioned to me that they had never flushed the trans while I was doing an oil change one day. I pretty much said the same thing. 05-16-2015, 05:23 PM
Sure would be nice.

So a small set back on the car today, which i think i finally fixed today.

My TSW bronze wheels are no more.... Reason being they are a 114.3 bolt pattern (alero is 5x115) and BEFORE i bought these wheels i did hours of research. Ive come accross people who say a dead no dont do it, and others who have ran them fine for years with just hub rings.

So the past couple days ive been doing ebrake work (wasnt engaging) so i would have to remove the wheel, well in the process id have one lug nut freeze up, and result in my having to snap a lug stud, i snapped 3 in 2 days. Front never had issue... But the rears kept snapping. They were stock hubs in rear (215k miles on em) so they could have been weak. But even torqueing the wheels to 100 ft lbs, i would come accross lug nuts thay were super tight, and others that were pretty lose when removing the wheels. Which worried me.

So last night, i replaced both rear hub assemblies since they have never been done. And now im selling my TSW wheels because i personally think its a safety hazard, i dont care if someone else is running a 114.3 without issue (GA owners are running them fine apparently) but i will not run a 114.3 wheel on the car again. To much to worry about. So sadly they have to go. So anyone who has a 114.3 bolt pattern and wants some 18's i got a set... Lol

But i picked these up today to replace them, and they are 5x115. So my issues with lug stud snapping should be over with.

Also had another issue today that i fixed. The bracket that holds my intermediate shaft to the block... The bolts backed out. And caused MASSIVE vibration at 80mph today. Funny cause i never touched those bolts since it was swapped. Needless to say the bolts were still there, very loosley, and i pulled the bolts put thread locker on em, and cranked em back down. Shouldnt be an issue anymore.

But just goes to show, this is why i want drive time as much as possible before the trip, i have to get all problems i may have sorted out before i drive 400+ miles...

Every wheel brand is different. I know guys on grand ams are running saleen replica wheels (114.3) and some sport edition KV5 wheels also 114.3 without issue. I had problems with TSW, cant gaurentee you will or wont have problems.
