Started tearing her down today. I need to take the front header off so i can change that donut. Which means i need to drop the radiator in order to get the bottom bolts. The way S&S designed these headers really doesn't help matter either. The bottom right bolt is a B*TCH. 90 degrees all week too so it sucks but it needs to be done. After i take care of the header i'll throw some new plug wires on her and maybe some new plugs. Hopefully this fixes my problem.
need to donate dem headers

Header studs FTW!!
Jawa, why don't you just buy headers, if you don't have money, you shouldn't be buying stuff :rolleyes2:
i do have the money, im just waiting on a set S&S headers to pop up some where,
i almost bought a set of pacesetters yesterday but ive heard they rust rather quickly,

Go with milzy or wot headers. Milzy has some nice ones and they are a lot easier to put on/take off than s&s. just got the header off 30 min ago. I was able to get the bottom right bolt off the header pretty easy so i was happy about that. The bolts holding the two headers together aren't in the best shape so new bolts and lock nuts for them along with loctite. Don't want them loosening up on me. The donut is in bad condition so i gotta find a new one of those. Idk if i should order a new header gasket or not....this one isn't too bad but its been on and off the car several times and is a little twisted. New plug wires and sparkplugs too while i'm at it.

Milzy has really nice ones, i plan to upgrade one day. Also i dont think ben even has headers available for the 3400 still. Unless you pay to order? Im not sure.
As for gaskets, are they metal? Usually you can reuse them if they still in good shape.

Ah idk about ben...haven't checked his site in a while. The gasket is metal...it's a pretty nice gasket i just didn't wanna take a chance using it again and then it leaks lol. I don't wanna take these headers (or header) off until i swap in my built engine/tranny. Idk i'm just being overly cautious

What trans are you going with?
You should be okay as long as its not to far gone id assume
Also, only headers i see on his site are pacesetter.

Milzy's are very nice, but you pay for it.
Ben was going to make headers years ago, and I prepaid for a set at a discounted price to help get the project off the ground (he only took 2 pre-orders). After waiting 2 years, I cancelled the order and got a refund. I'm certain they would have been nice (good stuff comes from Ben also), but I just couldn't wait on a job that always seemed to be on the back burner.

Don't feel bad, both Ben and Milzy turned down my request for a custom header project. Headers must be irritating to fabricate...
Or else they just thought I was nutz :awesome:

How long ago did you ask? I wonder if milzy would now. Probably wouldnt be cheap, his set now is almost 1000$

I paid about the same amount that milzy is charging for theirs. Milzy also gets the BEST ceramic coating. I know eventually the coating wears off but hey....i wanna know i had the best i could get on a 1000 part. Headers were DEF one of my favorite mods. I saw a set of milzys and they looked nice. Had a nice little gap to get the ratchet in there and put the bolts in. Nice bends..... so yea you get what you pay for. $900-$1000 is def a lot for just headers but our market is limited and at least someone is making them! lol.

No, they are too busy with the regular products, mine was a one-off custom idea that was kind of iffy, so can't blame them

Oh btw sleepy....i plan on going with a built 4t45 or maybe something else? IDK....i do know i want auto but it would be kind of cool to do a 6 speed auto....lots of moolah though. Would rather just put that money into a 45....COMPLETE build....in the future when i have the money like i used to i'll buy a high mileage tranny....send it to milzy and let him do what he does. That wont be until i already have a built 3500 sitting in my garage though ;) I can't wait for the day when i'm satisfied with my car. lol.

I dont think milzy offers much for building options on the 4t45.... Why not this route?
I thought about this before the 6 speed.

YES! Thank you....i found that before but couldn't find it when i was posting. Thought i bookmarked it lol. I called them about that a while ago and i just gotta send a core (or they can get one but i'd rather get it). But yea.....3k sucks but it sounds like a bad ass tranny....just don't know much about them....don't want something going wrong with the tranny and then i have to go down to NJ to get it fixed by them.
Update: It's sooooo damn hot/humid out i can't stand it so i've been slacking on the car. I got some parts i need but i advance didn't have any of those exhaust gasket donuts. They had some but they were too big or too small. So i'll try napa and a couple other places....just hope i can find one or i'll have to hit up mike.

Looking for some new plug wires but idk which route to go. I've had the taylor wires for about 6 years....msd is so much more it's ridiculous. I'm thinking the taylor thundervolt? Any opinions?

I have everything i need to get her done now EXCEPT the donut gasket.....NO place has the kind i need. NAPA got me excited earlier cause i thought they had it but he came back and said the one he found was the best he could find.....and it def wouldn't work. Soooo i guess i'll have to call Mike and see if he can get me one....idk where else to look.... so frustrating.

Not having any luck. You see how the one side of most of them is rounded? I need both sides to be like that. I think all of those have the one rounded side and the other is flat. That's how the one at NAPA was....this is a PITA....lol. Thank you for the link though....didn't think to check summit.

Why not use the highest rated RTV? Do a nice bead all the way around then mash together.

Ehhhh.....not too fond of doing it like that. That's the LAST resort....i have a fresh tube of it but i would really like to fix it correctly. I never thought it would be this hard to find one but it seems as if EVERY friggin header out there uses those other kind of gaskets. Wish S&S didn't go out of business....would be MUCH easier to get it. lol

Now see that's what i'm looking for....BUT idk if the other side of it is rounded too. Wish they had pics of both sides.

not sure if any of these would help you or not billy, but I was thinking that obx makes the S&S knock offs... maybe one of these might work?
