View Full Version : damn engine
So i noticed that this pig is eating oil due to valve stem seals being shot and it leaks bad. I'm sick of it. So I'm getting a 3500 in Monday and calling it a day

Billy I still havent seen your swap....
lol....i can't upload pics on here or GAGT....i updated GAGT a lot more though because they showed more interest than this site. I couldn't send pics to my email from my phone for some reason. It looks the same though, especially since i used the 3400 upper intake. Love the engine though.....only have about 29k on this one rather than the 150k i had on the 3400

Good luck!!! Although I really don't understand why if you are going through all the work why you wouldn't use a 3500 upper as well, its not that much more work!
I'm doing the 3400 upper because i don't wanna mess with the 3500 upper and its not really worth it to me. On a side note i picked up the engine today :-D

Don't you mean the LZ4?
LX9 been produced from 2004 to 2007 so if yours is coming out of a 2008 it should be a LZ4 with VVT
What i don't understand is why go true all the cost of buying the engine doing the swap & re-use the same heads? (that you're gona fix anyways?)
I mean would easier & probably cheaper to just fix/change the valve seals
Last thing did you see the engine running before you bought it?
Or least see the car that was coming from the see if the mileage is the real deal?
There is no way i would buy a engine from the scarp yard if i didn't see it running first , no way! in hell i would , even with a 3 months on used engine , imagine put the engine in & find out that you got to take out to get exchange for another one , what a waste of time
Just saying...
i ment a o5 i typoed it and i did verify the milage, it wont start because the starter was pulled, so yea im gambling on it a bit, but what the hell why not, if it needs some work i dont mind but i dont think it will

Got mine from a junkyard with 25k on it....runs PERFECT. Nothing wrong with getting them from there. Good luck with the swap....take your time and make sure you did everything right.
Yea I'm doing it this weekend. Should be running late sunday

Good luck with that....i thought it would only take us a weekend too....ended up taking 3 weeks....but thats cause we could only work on it 3 days a week....and we both are VERY meticulous....plus we ran into a few snags.
the 3400 will be out sat evening and the 3500 will be stripped and every thing swapped to the 3500 by sun morning

sorry stupid question but whats the benefit of the 3500 over the LA1
better designed engine, better cylinder heads better intake, more power.
i had to reorder the crank trigger kit through milzys, i went through mpracing, tried to call them for 2 days with no response to email or voice mails, so i canceled that order and went with milzys i hope to get the parts before sat but if not it will happen next weekend

you also gain about 40-50 hp just by swapping motors

is there a sticky somewhere for this (maybe on one of the GAGT sites)?
may wanna look into this, if it can be concealed as a 3.4L - and improves brake specific fuel consumption

I think there is a sticky, but its not worth it IMO.....

It's DEF worth it if you need a new engine. No sense is using the shitty 3400 when you can get the 3500. Total cost of the swap for me was about $900.....575 for the engine, 400 for the swap kit from milzy and a few other "tools" needed for the swap. I'm averaging about 24mpg city and highway which isn't much worse than the 3400....i got about 25 with the 3400. Reliability is MUCH better with the 3500.

Id swap a 3900 manual.. Makes 240 hp and 240 tq with the vvt thing and torque curve is crazy on it...

Did i ever said that engine from junkyard was no good? no!
All i am saying is to be careful , you know better be safe then sorry...
If i can't be sure of something or any doubts what so ever i let it go , i take no chances , specially with money...
But this is what i don't get , from what i can understand he want to swap the 3500 in the car with the 3400 heads on it with the bad valve seals?
Then that is a big waste of time & money since he'll have to fix the head anyways to put it in on the 3500 , might as well just keep the 3400 engine & fix the bad valve seals & save lots of money
For the money spend better swap the entire 3500 & forget about the 3400 engine parts IMO

25k... maybe , maybe not?
If you can't see the engine in the car it's would be impossible for anyone to know the real mileage of the engine & specially if you can't start it to see how it run's
Worst case if i couldn't test/start the engine before buying it i would probably ask them (or do it myself) to take out the spark plugs & see how good or bad they are that would give me a basic idea of the engine before i buy

Sorry! just got a few questions...
If both are ported the 3500 (LX9) should outperform the 3400 ported engine
What about the 3400 block with the upper parts of the 3500 on it would that perform as good as a ported 3500?
While we are on the subject , the 3500 (LX9) from 2004-2007 are base on the 3400 engine & the 3500 (LZ4) from 2006-2010 are base on the 3900 engine
Wouldn't be better to get the LZ4 as you would get more HP out if it since you could "over size" the block cylinders the get close to an ~3.9l + doing the top heads
Unless that engine is to different to fit right in the car using the same transmission?
Other question is the computer/chip inside the car would that need to be change?
& where is the computer chip located on the Alero?
Just curious...

All out ported race heads for boost, 3400 is superior.....
I can get 3.7 out of the 3400, the parts are in my garage for my race block..
I'm not swapping the heads. Im swapping the Upper intake manifold from the 3400 to the 3500 engine
The swap starts tonight. My pops came down and offers his help. He has 35 years in the automotive repair field. I'm stoked. Hoping to have the mother out tonight
